An admirable gelding who is a winner of 23 of his 92 races (15-59 on AW); has mopped up in this grade since joining Archie Watson in early 2018 and is top-rated of this quintet; 0-2 at Newcastle.

Veteran (16-87 on the AW); has kept poor form this winter and looks to be reaching the final stages of his racing career; masses to find with Captain Lars (and others) at the weights.

Often blots his copybook with a tardy start as was the case when finishing 4L fourth to The Grove in a Wolverhampton seller (7f) latest; worth another try at Newcastle (0-1 for Roger Fell previously).

Class 4 handicap winner for Simon Crisford at Yarmouth in August 2017 (5f, soft) and sold later that year for £7,500; has failed to beat a single rival in two starts for this trainer; risky dropped in grade.

Beaten ½L by Snazzy on debut over C&D on Good Friday 2018 (Conditions Stakes) and has run reasonably on both subsequent starts on turf - beaten at odds-on at Redcar in September; every chance eased in grade in receipt of weight.

Forecast

Captain Lars (1/1), Harperelle (13/8), Zapper Cass (9/2), Discreet Hero (20/1), Roy's Legacy (80/1)

Verdict

The obvious selection would be the admirable Captain Lars who has mopped up in these type of contests since joining Archie Watson in early 2018. However, he has probably been done few favours by this fixture being switched away from Southwell (0-2 at Gosforth Park). Therefore, in the interests of a sporting bet he's taken on with the filly HARPERELLE. She's clearly no star and would struggle to win a handicap off a mark of 73, but she did acquit herself reasonably well on her previous visit to Newcastle (on debut) and theoretically holds every chance at the weights in receipt of 22lb from the top-weight (when factoring in riders claims).
  1. Harperelle
  2. Captain Lars
  3. Zapper Cass
