Took advantage of a slipping mark when gamely scoring over 1m at Kempton last month under this rider, and almost followed up over same C&D next time. Up another 2lb, but respected in his current heart.

Won a 1m maiden at Chelmsford on second start, and further progress when runner-up to Thaayer in a novice event at Newcastle last time. Unexposed, and leading claims now handicapping.

Left Hughie Morrison for 9,000 gns after finishing a well beaten ninth of ten at Chelmsford in September, and fared no better on debut for current yard here last month. Watching brief advised.

Not won in over two years, but did hint at a revival on first start since leaving Eve Johnson Houghton at Chelmsford recently. Fairly handicapped if he can build on that, but others more compelling.

Yet to fully convince on AW, but stepped up on recent efforts when 1¾L fifth of 9 to Contrive in a C&D handicap on her latest start. Must build on that now.

Six-time winner who has struggled for form in 2018 and three runs for this yard have failed to show any improvement. An AW record of 0-5 also fails to inspire.

Multiple AW winner in his time, and now 2lb below his last winning mark, but he ran poorly again at Kempton last time, and may be waiting a while to capitalise on his falling mark.

Wore blinkers and eyeshields when winning over C&D for Amanda Perrett in September. Not disgraced starting out for new yard at Chelmsford last time, but goes without the headgear again here, and others preferred.

Remains a maiden after 17 runs, but ran a fine race when second of 13 to Juanito Chico in a 1m handicap at Kempton last time. Clearly capable of winning a handicap from this sort of mark, and should go well again here.

Not easy to catch right, but back to his very best when winning at Epsom in August. Not seen since a fair fourth there the following month, and may need this outing after a break, having left Hughie Morrison.

Showed unexpected reserves of stamina when winning Leger Legends race on debut for current yard, but disappointed after a break at Kempton last month. May do better with headgear refitted now.

De Vegas Kid26
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-0| J: George Downing| T: A W Carroll| OR:  72| D

Has scored five times in handicaps at up to 1m this year, and back to very best when ½L third of 10 to Sun Hat over C&D last time, finishing well. Should remain competitive.

Forecasts

Matterhorn (5/2), Family Fortunes (5/1), De Vegas Kid (7/1), Ambient (8/1), Six Strings (8/1), Central City (8/1), Zoraya (12/1), The Warrior (12/1), Makaarim (16/1), Frank Bridge (20/1), Pearl Spectre (20/1), Deadly Accurate (50/1)

Verdict

The improving MATTERHORN has been handed a fair mark for his handicap debut and is taken to come out on top for his powerful connections. Family Fortunes also merits respect having run really well on his last two starts on this surface, with the prolific De Vegas Kid not easily ruled out having got back to his very best over C&D last time.
