Bids to break a frustrating run of runner-up slots (2nd last four races) as he returns from a wind op. Shown no mercy by the handicapper on the back of those consistent efforts but has flattered to deceive before and may just need this outing.

Barton Rose27
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-12| J: Paul O'Brien(3)| T: C E Longsdon| OR:  105| CD
14/1
C&D winner and has shown some fair form in the past but has been running below form of late with the losing run starting to grow longer. Handicapper drops her slightly again and she is now only 1lb above her last winning mark; bit to prove currently.

From an Irish yard that do well with their GB raiders although this bumper winner was modest over hurdles (0-9); let down by his jumping on chase debut. First-time blinkers now added to the usual tongue-tie; note a market move.

Plenty to like about his Stratford win (showed improved form) under a new pilot and a longer trip with cheekpieces back on. After a couple of poor runs he bounced back to form last time and now reunited with winning rider; placed twice over C&D.

Capable of some fair form at this trip and further and won twice in this sphere off lower marks. Ran his best race so far when placed off a break at Newton Abbot (over longest trip so far) but has run two poor races since; visor on first-time.

Banny's Lad47
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-9| J: Harry Bannister| T: M & D Easterby| OR:  102| D

Dual chase winner in small fields early last year but his form since his last win has been a rather mixed bag over hurdles and fences. Fared no better back over fences last time (jumped left) at Huntingdon; 3lb below last winning mark.

Ulis De Vassyb4
Age: 10|  Weight: 11-7| J: Patrick Cowley(5)| T: Laura Morgan| OR:  100| CD
16/1
Has a C&D win amongst his three course victories although he often turns in a rather laboured display. Didn't jump well last time out at Newcastle and remains above his last winning mark; not easy to win with but back on his favourite course.

Age: 9|  Weight: 11-6| J: Miss Gina Andrews(3)| T: Mrs Caroline Bailey| OR:  99| D
11/2
Dual winning pointer whose second win in that sphere came by 20L and has shaped well under Rules winning back-to-back handicaps when last seen (April 2017). Mark still looks workable if he's ready to go on his return; thriving when last seen.

Looked modest over hurdles but clearly thought capable of better (given the market support) when sent chasing last time. Made a few mistakes and faded late on; now tried in cheekpieces the first time and not written off.

Age: 8|  Weight: 11-2| J: David Bass| T: K Bailey & M Nicholls| OR:  95| D
9/2
A winner in point-to-points (fair form over hurdles) and he's no lost cause returning to fences off a lower mark than he's been running off over the smaller obstacles. Not seen for a while but yard are going well and one to include in calculations.

Age: 7|  Weight: 10-11| J: Danny Cook| T: J Parkinson & S Smith| OR:  90
10/1
Showed ability on his bumper debut before failing to progress over hurdles (jumped poorly a couple of times). Well found in the market for his chasing debut at Bangor but badly let down by his jumping; best watched on that premise.
12
Horse silk
Shininstar21
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-0| J: Miss L Brooke(7)| T: J Groucott| OR:  76
7/1
0-14 overall (0-7; fences) but has been well supported in his last two races but never looked likely to land a blow on either occasion. Runs from out the handicap here but despite the recent market support he's not one to rely on.

Forecasts

Ben Arthur (9/2), Troufion (11/2), Shininstar (7/1), Overtoujay (7/1), It's Buster (10/1), Orchestrated (11/1), Boughtbeforelunch (12/1), Barton Rose (14/1), Ulis De Vassy (16/1), Banny's Lad (16/1), Manwell (20/1), Soleglad (20/1)

Verdict

A low-grade but quite an intriguing little race where perennial runner-up Manwell looks of interest back from wind surgery. Both Overtoujay and Ulis De Vassy have plenty of form around here but despite that fact neither could be considered solid options. It will be interesting to see what Troufion can do back from a long break as he strives for his hat-trick. Irish raider Soleglad needs watching in the market with Boughtbeforelunch another who may be better than he’s shown. The Kim Bailey yard are ticking along nicely and his BEN ARTHUR looks well treated back from a break and returning to fences.
