Starts the new season back over fences (3-12) from a challenging looking handicap mark; Southwell hurdle winner (3m) on his penultimate start from a 10lb lower mark.

Instant Replay25
Age: 6|  Weight: 12-2| J: Nathan Moscrop(5)| T: B Ellison| OR:  121

Started off well over fences by winning his first two races at Sedgefield (2m3f-2m5f) in early 2018, but hit the deck mid-race over 3m here in March; still young and capable, but not obviously well treated off a mark of 121.

Age: 8|  Weight: 12-2| J: B S Hughes| T: D McCain Jnr| OR:  121| D

Mixed fortunes over fences, but did manage to finish second at this track prior to winning at Perth (3m, soft) in April; 4lb higher in the weights today (disappointing the past twice) on his first appearance for Donald McCain.

Historically seems best suited to Kelso but has also won elsewhere, including by 6L from Ifandbutwhynot over 2m here in March; handicap mark easing; needs to significantly better a couple of modest runs of late.

Return Flightp23
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-10| J: C O'Farrell| T: R Menzies| OR:  115
11/1
Stablemate of Tomkevi; struggling on the whole until a slightly improved run at Stratford (2m5f, good) last month, but unfortunately for his connections that race ended when in contention at the second last fence; handicap mark feasible.
6

Royal Salute210
Age: 8|  Weight: 11-1| J: Jonathon Bewley(3)| T: G Bewley| OR:  106
20/1
Has managed to complete just once in six starts for this trainer (FFPP4P), so has dropped in the weights accordingly - now 8lb lower than when winning at Plumpton in January 2017 (3m1f+, heavy); fresh from a summer break.
7
Horse silk
Romulus Du Donjonp9
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-13| J: William Shanahan(7)| T: R Dobbin| OR:  104
17/2
Needs to bounce back quickly from a laboured showing at Ayr (2m4f+) just nine days ago and is an eight-race maiden over fences; that said, has run well from similar marks here in the past (2m5f-3m), so not at all ruled out.
8
Horse silk
Calivignyt,v180
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-13| J: Lucy Alexander| T: N W Alexander| OR:  104| DWS
11/2
Remains a maiden over fences (0-15) but is attractively treated on past Carlisle form (2m4f soft/heavy); possible that recent wind surgery will hold the key, and is fancied to out-run his projected odds on seasonal reappearance.
9
Horse silk
Square Vivianip22
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-11| J: Alain Cawley| T: Micky Hammond| OR:  102
9/1
Former French racer (D. Cottin), and a four-time winner over fences (2m1f+-2m3f+); fallen 15lb in the weights since joining this stable; last seen toiling in the rear after a scruffy round of fencing at Sedgefield (2m5f) in October.
10
Horse silk
Ryalex25
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-5| J: S Mulqueen(3)| T: Miss Lucinda V Russell| OR:  96| BF
4/1
Maiden under rules (0-10), and competes without his regular hood today (only has one ear) after folding tamely at odds of 6/5f over 2m here last month; risky returned to a longer trip (does stay).
11
Horse silk
Instingtive9
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-0| J: Ross Chapman(3)| T: Miss L Harrison| OR:  87| C
5/1
Not a regular winner, but has run well on each of his last two starts, notably when beaten just ¾L by Halcyon Days over 2m here (good to soft) last month; 4lb out of the weights; stays 2m4f without a problem.

Forecasts

Ryalex (4/1), Instingtive (5/1), Calivigny (11/2), Rainy City (7/1), Romulus Du Donjon (17/2), Square Viviani (9/1), Instant Replay (10/1), Return Flight (11/1), Royal Salute (20/1), Tomkevi (22/1), Sudski Star (25/1)

Verdict

No standout contender, but a few with logical chances on recent form including the lowly-rated Instingtive, and the reasonably weighted Romulus Du Donjon, albeit that 7yo Rose Dobbin-trained grey did turn in a tepid effort at Ayr just nine days ago. Therefore, in the interests of a truly sporting selection, we'll take aim at CALIVIGNY. Nick Alexander hasn't saddled too many runners so far this autumn (stable form is an unknown) but this 9yo has had wind surgery since his last start at Perth in May and there's no denying that he's potentially thrown-in off a reduced mark of 104 based upon his previous (2017) C&D form.
  1. Calivigny
  2. Romulus Du Donjon
  3. Instingtive
