Came good when winning at Carlisle last time on third start for current yard. That came on fast ground though and on all previous form he has struggled on soft going so has a tough task off 5lb higher mark.

Won Doncaster maiden on debut last year for Michael Dods in soft ground before disappointing and changing hands in ths spring. Third on soft ground at Nottingham penultimate start over 1m2f so stamina here has to be taken on trust.

Won over C&D last summer on quick ground. Inconsistent this campaign but went close again here over this trip in June. Chance if handling much softer conditions.

Only win came on debut for this yard over C&D in June but has been well beaten both starts since. Ground may prove soft enough, but good apprentice claims valuable 5lb so not ruled out of the equaition.

In good form on AW last autumn and ran well enough on last two starts this spring. Returns from 111 day break, goes well fresh, and handles soft ground, so with good apprentice claiming 5lb is of interest.

Won twice for Ed Walker, including over this trip, but had been a disappointment for current yard until returning last time from wind surgery where ran well enough at Ripon. Eased 2lb and may not be too far away.

Three wins in Ireland at up to 1m2f for David Marnane. Mostly disappointing since joining current yard in February last year and is hard to fancy on recent evidence.

Only win from 16 starts came in 1m2f Nottingham handicap last year on good ground. In poor form this term and plummeted in weights prior to much better effort when second last time at Beverley. Steps up in trip but has claims.

Handles easy ground and has won at this trip in the past. Two fair efforts of late following break and may be running into form so has each-way prospects under promising apprentice who claims 5lb.

Made winning debut at Ayr (6f) last year but has mostly run badly this season and duly come 10lb down the weights. Beaten less than four lentghs last time however over 10f and tries a new trip this time.

Two wins at up to 1m2f on the continent but showed nothing in four outings over hurdles for current yard. Better back on the Flat when thrd at Beverley last time staying on well over shorter trip, so worth a look.

Third in Leicester seller over 10f for Richard Hannon and claimed to join current yard. Distant second in Market Rasen juvenile hurdle last time. Should handle ground and jockey booking catches the eye.

Only win in 21 starts came over 1m1f but looks worth a try at this longer trip after staying on second at Beverley last time (1m2f). Soft ground a concern though on previous evidence.

Regressive five-year-old who has struggled on all starts since joining current yard in September 2016. Very hard to recommend and others are much preferred.

Yet to reach a place in six starts but did better last time when fourth of 10 on AW at Newcastle. Steps up in trip and is 1lb out of the handicap but not a complete no-hoper.

Forecasts

Clenymistra (6/1), Princess Nearco (7/1), King's Coinage (8/1), Palindrome (17/2), Albert Boy (9/1), Fisher Green (9/1), Champagne Rules (10/1), Bogardus (11/1), Strongarm Chaser (11/1), French Flyer (12/1), Aelius (16/1), Pindaric (22/1), New Britain (25/1), Excalibur (25/1), Pullman Brown (50/1), Arizona Sunrise (66/1), Rosie Hall (150/1)

Verdict

Something of a puzzle with the changing ground conditions adding to the mystery. CHAMPAGNE RULES has as good a chance as any. He goes well fresh and handles soft ground, and with a good young rider claiming 5lb shouldn't be too far away. Bogardus won last time but the ground is now a concern, but Clenymistra seems to go well here so has claims along with the likes of Albert Boy and King's Coinage. The step up in trip should suit Aelius who looks potentially well handicapped, while Excalibur and Strongarm Chaser are others in with a shout in an open affair.
  1. Champagne Rules
  2. Aelius
  3. Clenymistra
