Took advantage of the better ground under the stands rail to score at Chepstow (7f) and a 6lb rise as a result seemed harsh. To his credit he has shaped well on both starts since but he remains 0-6 at this trip and 0-26 in this grade.

Winning French miler acquired for 2,500 gns last month. Handles soft ground but form is hard to evaluate and he is best watched.

Serjeant Painter15
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-9| J: Hayley Turner| T: M P Tregoning| OR:  72

Has shown some ability in maidens and his latest run followed an 11 week break. Appears to handle soft ground but hard to be convinced he has been allotted a workable mark. Worth a market check.

Has two decent pieces of form on his CV but the overall picture is unconvincing. Debuts for a top yard who can transform their acquisitions and rider is in confident form.

Sole win came off a higher mark at Salisbury last September (1m,good). Fair third on debut for new yard a month ago and the winner has scored since.

Winner on rock hard ground at Bath in May and has coped with her new mark since. Had no chance from out of the weights last week but concerns here that the ground may be too soft.

Form of her first two starts would give her every chance off this mark, but this was the level she ran to at Catterick when a disappointing favourite. Needs to settle better.

Maggie Jonks61
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-2| J: Rob Hornby| T: A M Balding| OR:  65
16/1
Best effort came when fourth in a poor Redcar maiden on her reappearance. Nevertheless her handicap mark looks about right given how that form has worked out. Her pedigree suggests she will benefit from the slower ground so worth a market check.

Forecasts

The Groove (2/1), Mankind (2/1), Air Of York (7/1), Serjeant Painter (9/1), Aqua Libre (10/1), Bidding War (10/1), Maggie Jonks (16/1), Ascot Day (25/1)

Verdict

Mankind (on stable debut) and Maggie Jonks (on soft ground) are two who may step up on recent performances and need to be monitored for clues from the market. There are doubts about Aqua Libre on an easy surface and Serjeant Painter's initial mark. Air Of York is winless in this grade but this is not the strongest of class 5's and he remains in good form. THE GROOVE is proven on testing ground and has dropped below his last winning mark. There were positive signs on his stable debut and, with the winner scoring on Sunday, he has a lot to recommend him.
