Off the mark at the tenth attempt (AW debut) when winning by a short-head at Wolverhampton (7f) recently; up 3lb and should stay this extra yardage as a half-sister to 6f-1m winner Pumaflor.

Still 4lb above his last winning mark (over C&D in August 2017), but that's because he's largely consistent; blip at Beverley latest (had a short break since) and could prove well suited by dropping back in trip to 1m.

33/1
14-race maiden who has left Mark Usher since a dismal Salisbury effort (1m4f) last month; down in trip on debut for a trainer who specialises with problem horses; various bits of headgear newly applied in order to curb his keen tendencies.

River Cafe19
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-5| J: P J Dobbs| T: S Kirk| OR:  58
10/1
Five-race maiden with minimal AW experience; dropped 7lb since sent handicapping but needs to better her Leicester (1m) and Nottingham (1m2f) efforts.

9/1
Just the sole 6f heavy ground debut win to his name, and off the track since March, so it's easier to be pessimistic about his chances rather than positive with his three previous AW efforts (7f-1m) merely moderate.

Jungle Queenp10
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-3| J: Charles Bishop| T: Eve Johnson Houghton| OR:  56
10/1
Seven-race maiden who has failed to put her best foot forward since sent handicapping, with an especially poor run at Bath latest (1m, firm); quick ground mightn't be ideal for her, so the switch to the AW could help (but does need to).

Master Poet28
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-1| J: T P Queally| T: R M H Cowell| OR:  54
6/1
Unexposed and upped in trip on handicap debut after making just three starts (6f) so far; cost 45,000gns as a yearling, with his best effort coming at Nottingham in May when finishing 11¾L third to Tabdeed.

Beloved Knight18
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-0| J: William Carson| T: Mrs L J Mongan| OR:  53
7/1
Ten-race maiden who has had plenty of chances; however, his better efforts have come on artificial surfaces and he's now 2lb lower than when beaten a neck by Gas Monkey at Kempton (1m) in April; drop in trip a positive move.

Baileys Excelh5
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-13| J: Lewis Edmunds(3)| T: C A Dwyer| OR:  52| BF
11/1
Nine-race maiden who is yet to race over any further than 6f; hails from a much respected yard with a promising claimer booked, but a watching brief could only be advised at present.

Casey Banter23
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-7| J: Shelley Birkett(3)| T: Miss J Feilden| OR:  45
16/1
Seven-race maiden who has run very poorly since finishing 3L third at Kempton in September 2017 (6f); stamina doubts over this trip; best to look elsewhere.

Forecasts

Lucifugous (5/4), Master Poet (6/1), Beloved Knight (7/1), Greeneyedafghan (9/1), River Cafe (10/1), Jungle Queen (10/1), Baileys Excel (11/1), Four Fifty Three (12/1), Casey Banter (16/1), Rainbow Jazz (33/1)

Verdict

Seemingly the weaker of the two divisions, so there has to be every chance that Lucifugous can follow up her 7f Wolverhampton AW debut win, but equally there's potentially some better value elsewhere. Beloved Knight has had plenty of chances, but is handily weighted and should relish this drop in trip and switch back to the AW, whilst the handicap debutante Master Poet is the least exposed and won't have to be very good in order to play a leading role. However, the sporting pick is the dropped in trip C&D winner FOUR FIFTY THREE, who would be a most topical winner of this 4.55pm contest.
  1. Four Fifty Three
  2. Beloved Knight
  3. Lucifugous
