Can occasionally be a bit keen but knocking on the door after good efforts at Lingfield and Hamilton. On same mark here, has a good draw to work from and if getting a pace to aim at, decent chance of scoring.

Excellent seasonal reappearance when scoring at York a couple of weeks ago, finding plenty for pressure late (and was well backed to do so). Looks an improver this season so from just 4lb higher here, has to be taken seriously.

Made the most of a good draw to run the classy Spoof close at Chester last time, only getting collared late. Up 3lb for that, which is fair enough, but hasn't fared so well with the draw this time and may need a bit more.

Winner on final start last season at Newmarket but going nowhere in two starts this year only beating one home. Plenty to prove at present and despite handicapper releasing his grip quite quickly, makes minimal appeal.

Twice a winner already this season and ran well after finding early trouble at York (behind Koditime) last time. Gets a slight pull in the weights with the winner and another that would appreciate a good pace up front early. Not discounted.

Two very solid efforts lately, fifth (from a poor draw) behind Spoof at Chester and then only beaten a length at York last time. That form ties him in closely with a few others here and no reason not to go close.

Has had three starts, and improved a little on each one of them. Win over Midsummer Knight at Newcastle in March looks solid form, and only just touched off at Bath latest. Will progress again and has a good draw to work from.

Just behind Cowboy Soldier at Newcastle in March and has progressed since then, running the fast-improving Yalta close at Newmarket latest (made most, caught late). Another with chances in a very difficult contest to solve.

Forecasts

Koditime (9/4), Midsummer Knight (10/3), Lake Volta (7/2), Cowboy Soldier (9/2), Dotted Swiss (12/1), Joegogo (16/1), Looks A Million (25/1), Consequences (33/1)

Verdict

Midsummer Knight is likely to make a bold bid from the front, but the likely good pace he makes might set it up for something to pinch it late. On that score, LAKE VOLTA makes plenty of appeal as he needs a solid pace to use his good finish, and won't mind a bit of rain either. In truth, it's hard to rule any of these out of what looks an open event, but Cowboy Soldier is one that makes appeal as a possible improver.

  3. Midsummer Knight
