Listed scorer who won twice on very soft ground in France (both 1m3f) and has not been seen since the second of those in October 2016. Gelded since then and now makes debut for this trainer from a handy mark based on his old form. Market check.
Has won here over 1m and also scored on heavy ground twice. Withdrawn from only previous entry over this trip so has stamina to prove and on pedigree that is far from certain.
Half of his six wins have come on soft and five of them have been over this trip, including when last seen at Redcar in October. Up 4lb for that and has not won when fresh since 2013 but not easy to put a line through him.
Enjoyed good 2017, winning a 7f Leicester maiden (soft) and making improvement in his first three handicaps despite not winning. Had wind surgery since below par in September. Returns in blinkers for stable that was 5-11 here last year. Claims.
Turf successes have been on good/fast ground and was beaten 24L in this race in 2016 on his only try on heavy ground. He does have some good form here, though he is 0-5 at the track and has been beaten favourite twice at the track. Bit to prove.
Acts on good to soft ground, though yet to prove quite as effective when it has been slower. Has won when fresh, so a six-month absence is less of a concern than her current handicap mark.
Scored over C&D (soft) in July when 3lb lower and in first-time cheekpieces. They are discarded today for first time since that win. Worth noting that his three best efforts have all been over C&D, including from this mark. Stable in form. Claims.
Another who goes well here and has twice scored over 1m4f at the venue, including on soft last year. Just 1lb higher again today but while he is certainly respected, he is arguably better over further and his record when fresh is a concern.
Won a 0-90 at York (1m2½f, good to soft) last season from today's mark and went close to a repeat at Beverley later. Won a sprint here on debut back in 2016, so can go well when fresh and enters calculations.
Goes well on soft ground and has won on it over 1m when with Marcus Tregoning. Has stamina to prove over this far, however and both pedigree and what we have seen from him on the racecourse suggests that has to be a concern.
2lb worse off with Mulligatawny, whom he beat ½L over C&D (good) in August when springing a 50-1 shock. Well held both starts since (inc. on heavy and from this mark) so has a little to prove, including fitness on his reappearance.
Goes well here, where he has won over both C&D (good to soft) and 1m (good). Has not been as effective on deep ground to date and still 3lb higher than his best winning mark, he will need to have improved for his Naas return last month.
Was the easy winner of a C&D maiden (good) 12-months ago and bettered that despite defeat on soft at Doncaster next time. Unable to improve on that for William Haggas and starts from 3lb lower for trainer who won this in 2015. Not ruled out.
Goes well on soft though remains 9lb higher than when scoring at Hamilton (1m3f) in September. Went close from 1lb lower at Nottingham in October. Hinted at revival last time, though it is a concern that he has been well beaten on both runs here.
Veteran who has run well here in the past without winning. Goes on any ground (has won on heavy). Finished last season in good form and was competitive from this mark, though has never won when fresh, which is offputting.
Scored here over 1m1f (good) last June when 2lb higher. Acts on soft ground but has never been at his best over this far and others are preferred.
Forecasts
To Dibba (2/1), Awake My Soul (13/2), Indian Chief (10/1), Carnageo (11/1), Mukhayyam (12/1), Mulligatawny (14/1), Appointed (16/1), Daawy (16/1), Storm Ahead (16/1), Swift Emperor (16/1), King's Pavilion (20/1), Medrano (22/1), Mutamaded (25/1), Whatsthemessage (33/1), Silvery Moon (33/1), Magic City (50/1)
Another tricky puzzle for punters and the suggestion is MULLIGATAWNY, who loves this place, acts on testing ground and is on a very competitive mark. To Dibba is feared given his trainer's record here as well as the colt's profile, while Appointed looks to be the most interesting of a trio saddled by last year's winning-most trainer at the venue, Tim Easterby. Neither Daawy nor Awake My Soul can be ruled out, while Medrano deserves a market check after a lengthy absence.
- Mulligatawny
- To Dibba
- Appointed
