Has suffered this season for his run in last year's Neptune at the Cheltenham Festival and been unable to answer the handicapper's calls. This is not as strong as some races he has contested this term but he still looks to be in need of a favour.

Began well over hurdles last season and was putting together a useful CV before being pulled up at Kempton a year ago. Not seen since and handicapper has dropped him 3lb ahead of this handicap debut. Market check prudent.

Equalled his best effort when winning over 2m5½f (heavy) at Wincanton in January, though was found out by a 5lb rise last time in what was a comparable performance. Nudged up another 1lb but has each-way claims.

Won a Chepstow maiden (2m3½f) and an Exeter novices' contest (2m7f, soft) earlier in the season. Was well beaten when unseating at Warwick on handicap debut last time and now dropped 2lb with headgear on. Stiff task.

Has shown improved form on a couple of occasions this season in winning at Uttoxeter and Leicester on soft/heavy. Struggled in a 0-125 at Ascot last time after rising to this mark, but frame claims if at his best.

Put together back-to-back wins at Catterick and Wetherby 13-months ago at up to 3m1½f and on soft ground. Handicapper caught up with him since, but has shown he can still compete from this sort of mark, although not the most consistent.

Ran up a hat-trick last season, the last of them being his handicap debut, meaning that he then had some tough assignments. Now 15lb lower than his ceiling rating and showed signs of revival last time. Not ruled out of the money.

Broke her duck at this track over 2m4½f (good to soft) in November. Handicapper didn't miss that 14L success and put her up a stone. Ran quite well in better company last time and 1lb drop won't harm, but needs more improvement.

Unexposed after just one handicap run where he won at Southwell (2m4½f, soft) last time. Raised 11lb for that comfortable 2½L success, which a face value looks harsh. Up in grade here too, so will need a fair bit more to get involved.

Both his wins came in the spring of 2016 at up to 2m5½f, including on soft. 4lb higher than the best of those due to a narrow defeat at Exeter (2m7f) last time, when the front pair were 14L clear. Looks a serious player.

The last of his eight wins was over a similar trip at Bangor (soft) in December 2015 from 2lb higher. Has consistently produced that sort of performance since, including last time in a jumpers' bumper. Enters calculations with 5lb claimed.

Another consistent performer who gained due reward for that when scoring at Sedgefield (2m4f, soft) last month. Dam is a half-sister to a 3m hurdle winner, so no forlorn hope now stepped up to this trip though needs improvement from 5lb higher.

Scored at Warwick (2m, soft) a year ago in novices' company, but has not yet been able to get truly competitive in handicaps. Has stamina to prove here and from same mark as last time, if she can find a bit more then she has an each-way squeak.

Has shown improved form in his last two starts in novices' contests at Bangor and Wetherby, shaping as if this longer trip would suit. Initial handicap mark looks fair and he is probably worth a market check.

Verdict

Competitive fayre where the suggestion is VOLCANIC, who has not won for some time but is very consistent and a 5lb claim might tip the scales in his favour. Aaron Lad is interesting now stepped up in trip, while there are plenty who are capable of claiming a share of the spoils on their day, including Malapie, Aengus, Doesyourdogbite and Zanstra.
