Sold for just £4,000 in September 2017, so presumably this Lingfield (1m2f) maiden winner for John Gosden in January 2017 has had his fair share of training problems. Penalised for stable debut.

Duke Of Marmalade gelding who sprung a 33/1 shock on his Flat debut at Southwell in November (1m4f). Penalised, and drops back in trip, with neither of those facts being ideal.

Runner up to Cunco in the Bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown in April 2017 (1m2f). Left Ralph Beckett after running at Royal Ascot in June, but yet to grasp the nettle for this trainer just yet. Significant drop in class.

Placed here over 1m1f+ on debut in January, but comprehensively beaten at Southwell since, and shouldn't prove anywhere near strong enough today.

Changed hands cheaply and unraced in July 2017 (7,500 gns). Hasn't appeared anything out of the ordinary in a couple of spins on the AW so far (1m4f), and drops right back in trip now.

Half-brother to a sprint winner (Whatdoiwanthatfor) and on breeding could find this trip a stretch on debut. However, he cost 50,000 gns as a yearling, and this trainer is fully adept at getting one ready to race.

Placed over C&D in May 2016 (maiden) on his sole start for William Haggas. No show in a couple of recent hurdles starts for this trainer after a lengthy absence, and couldn't really be entertained.

Unraced fifth foal by Dark Angel, and a half-brother to various winners including 1m scorer Montalcino. Cost 60,000 gns as a yearling.

Unraced sixth foal by Holy Roman Emperor, and a full-brother to Italian 5f to 1m2f winner Sabbygo. Cost €40,000 as a yearling (£20,000 as a juvenile), but arrives late to racing at the age of four.

Tailed off and pulled up in a Fakenham bumper on debut last month (2m soft), and already difficult to see what positives he'll have to offer on the Flat.

Unraced second foal by Schiaparelli out of Tabulate. Half-sister to 2m winning hurdler Martha McCandles, and looks more of an obvious type for Plumpton than a Wolverhampton novice stakes.

Sixties Icon filly who has been absent since debuting at Brighton in August (7f good to soft). She shouldn't lack for stamina on pedigree, and returns wearing a hood.

Regressed after making a pleasing start in a 1m4f Wetherby bumper for Micky Hammond in December 2016. Switched to the Flat by current connections here last month, when finishing a never nearer 4¼L third to Regina Nostra (7f).

Verdict

Not the usual Wolverhampton Novices Stakes quality, and quite truthfully a rather peculiar looking field of 13 runners. Many of these horses would have their own individual stories to tell if able to do so, with the likes of Keswick a maiden winner for John Gosden in January 2017, but knocked down without further action for just £4,000 eight months later. Summer Name is another winner with an unconventional profile whilst Reine Des Miracles clearly appreciates Flat racing more than hurdling. George Scott's Keir Hardie might prove the pick of the newcomers, but this rates as a golden opportunity for INTERN to get his once promising career back on track.
