Not in the same form up at Musselburgh this winter as the previous one, when twice a runner up in competitive stayers handicap hurdles. However, was a fairly frequent Flat winner in his days with John Quinn, so couldn't be totally dismissed.

Won his fair share of races over the years (6 from 40), and did score over fences at Market Rasen on Boxing Day (2m1f soft). Slightly surprising if others aren't sharper for this type of test.

Dual bumper winner in early 2017, including for Mark Johnston. Proved a shrewd acquisition for £28,000, winning on the Flat (2m) and over hurdles for this trainer, so of obvious interest despite this being his AW debut.

Has mainly mixed hurdling with fencing of late. Bought very cheaply and wisely by his current connections, thriving on the AW (Flat) last winter at Wolverhampton and Southwell (1m4f), albeit those victories were achieved in low grade affairs.

Lightly raced, but still to break his duck for this trainer (ex Dan Skelton). Promises to find a race or two in handicap company, maybe over 2m4f, but shouldn't trouble the likely market principals here.

Former Alan King trained inmate who was back to winning ways with relative ease at Catterick last month (2m3f+ handicap hurdle), beating subsequent Sedgefield scorer Aaron Lad. AW proven (Polytrack), and looks a most likely potential winner.

A mare who is beginning to appear to be a little exposed (once with Pam Sly). Low grade 0-95 handicap hurdles will see her at her strongest, but she shouldn't be sharp enough to land a bumper against higher rated hurdles rivals.

13/2
A winner on his hurdles debut at Hexham in August (2m maiden good), he's rather surprisingly not kicked on since. Has AW experience at Newcastle, and the suspicion remains that he's capable of more, but not for today.

Forecasts

Golden Jeffrey (2/1), Fair Loch (10/3), Tyrell (4/1), Something Brewing (13/2), Arthurs Secret (10/1), Royal Mandate (12/1), My Renaissance (14/1), Rose Tree (33/1)

Verdict

One of the more open contests on today's Newcastle card with a number of interesting and capable performers in the line up. However, we'll choose to focus upon a couple of the more likely winners, and these include both Golden Jeffrey and TYRELL. The former has a proven history of winning on the level (bumpers and on the Flat), and was certainly a shrewd acquisition by Iain Jardine; who also saddles Something Brewing. However, the Micky Hammond string are in fine fettle at present, with Tyrell amongst his recent winners. This former Alan King trained inmate handles artificial surfaces well enough, and has found a decent opportunity during a prolonged spell of Arctic weather to follow up his Catterick victory in the very capable hands of Joe Colliver.
  1. Tyrell
  2. Golden Jeffrey
  3. Arthurs Secret
