Made all the running when winning at Leicester (2m6½f, soft) in this month last year, mostly been disappointing since. Back on winning mark today, but must bounce back.

Freddies Portraitb1,t39

8/1
Winner of 2m Carlisle novice handicap chase in February last year on soft ground, three efforts this season have been very tame, pulled up last month at Ludlow and hard to garner enthusiasm despite shorter trip and first-time blinkers.

Must Havea Flutter38
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-10| J: Harry Skelton| T: D Skelton| OR:  105
6/1
Was placed in a couple of point-to-points and so the 2m trip at Leicester for his chase debut last month would have been plenty short enough. Not a bad effort though and he is more interesting now stepped up to this distance and dropped 3lb.

Midnight Merlot36
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-8| J: Thomas Bellamy| T: Noel Williams| OR:  103
16/1
Modest hurdler, may do better over fences and shaped with some promise last month at Wetherby (2m3½f, soft) on chase bow. More required now.
5

Norse Lightt,v17
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-2| J: David Bass| T: David Dennis| OR:  97| D
5/2
Running consistently well over fences and hurdles whilst remaining feasibly treated. Scored at Huntingdon on Boxing Day over these obstacles (2m4f, good to soft), 5lb higher now and will need to find extra to score in this higher grade.

Dartford Warbler32
Age: 11|  Weight: 11-0| J: Danny Cook| T: J Parkinson & S Smith| OR:  95| C
9/2
Just one win to his name over fences from 19 attempt and is difficult to get right in this sphere. Well held here last month over longer trip, eased 2lb since, trainer has a good record here and not written off.

Chanceofa Lifetime37
Age: 11|  Weight: 11-0| J: Alex Chadwick(7)| T: V Thompson| OR:  95
16/1
Three wins from 18 over fences, though nothing since Sedgefield success April 2016 over 3m2f (soft). Pulled up over that C&D last month on first start for over a year, now 11-years-old and best days might be in the past.

Miss Amelia36
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-13| J: Henry Brooke| T: M Walford| OR:  96
8/1
Fairly modest hurdler in four starts, made chasing debut last month at Wetherby (2m3½f, soft) and finished 37L last of six. Watching brief seems safest for now.
9

Las Tunas24
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-13| J: R P McLernon| T: R M Smith| OR:  94
8/1
Some good form last season, including Ayr success (2m, soft) in February and good effort at Perth in April. Hasn't found testing ground to his liking in two runs since turn of the year and stamina questions to be answered. Others more compelling.

Dougalstarp27
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-0| J: David Noonan| T: J Candlish| OR:  64
33/1
A 23-race maiden and failed to complete on his last three outings and races from well out of the handicap today. Needs a dramatic change in fortune.

Forecasts

Norse Light (5/2), Dartford Warbler (9/2), Must Havea Flutter (6/1), Las Tunas (8/1), Sunny Ledgend (8/1), Freddies Portrait (8/1), Miss Amelia (8/1), Chanceofa Lifetime (16/1), Midnight Merlot (16/1), Dougalstar (33/1)

Verdict

Plenty with questions to answer in this line-up. Norse Light has been running fairly consistently and took a Huntingdon prize on Boxing Day, he should go well but has failed to add to his tally in two runs since and goes up in grade today. Sunny Ledgend is back on his last winning mark but must put some poor recent efforts to one side, while Dartford Warbler is given some chance of bouncing back to form. MUST HAVEA FLUTTER shaped adequately on chase debut at Leicester last time and may find this longer trip more to his liking. If he settles, he can go well for the Skelton brothers.
  1. Must Havea Flutter
  2. Norse Light
  3. Sunny Ledgend
