Rattled up a hat-trick of wins in the autumn, but found life tougher off a career-high mark at Southwell last month. Runs off the same mark, which poses a problem, but cannot be ruled out.

Winning point-to-pointer who was making only his second chase start when second over 3m2f at Fontwell recently. Shorter trip may suit and further improvement is on the cards.

Age: 12|  Weight: 11-10| J: A Thornton| T: Mrs L C Jewell| OR:  94| D
20/1
Five-times chase winner who, though he has reached the veteran stage, continues to perform with credit. Has not won since March, 2015, however, and will do well to end his losing run despite a reduced handicap mark.

Runner-up on his last two starts off around this mark, the latter in a first-time visor which is retained. No reason he should not produce another bold display, but has stamina to prove.

9/2
Experienced campaigner who usually runs his race but in recent times has had difficulty getting his head in front. Handicap mark continues to fall and he is young enough to make the most of it at some stage.
6

Gowellb,t9
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-3| J: Kevin Jones(5)| T: J W Mullins| OR:  87

Has cut little ice on her last three starts, the latest in first-time blinkers which are fitted again. Needs to reproduce the form which saw her finish third of six at this track in November.

General Girlingb11
Age: 11|  Weight: 11-1| J: H Cobden| T: R J Hodges| OR:  85| D
20/1
Back-to-back wins last March, but has been well beaten in four subsequent starts, three of them for his current trainer. Approaching the veteran stage and will do well to match strides with younger rivals.

Age: 9|  Weight: 10-7| J: Mitchell Bastyan(5)| T: B Barr| OR:  77| CD

Only one win in 22 starts over fences, but it did come over C&D last March. By no means disgraced at Ludlow last time and has prospects off 2lb lower with good claimer on board.

Has had only two runs over fences, the most recent when pulled up at Wincanton following a lay-off of almost two years. Best watched until revealing more.

Both hurdles wins have come at this track and he was second in this contest a year ago off this mark. Well held over hurdles last time and needs to up his game back over fences.

Failed to win a race when trained by David Pipe, but three runs for his current yard have offered encouragement that he could put that right at some stage. One to consider.

Forecasts

For Carmel (5/2), Kings Cross (9/2), Burgess Dream (6/1), Carqalin (13/2), Veauce De Sivola (13/2), Very Live (10/1), Irish Octave (16/1), Gowell (16/1), General Girling (20/1), Itoldyou (20/1), Residence And Spa (25/1), Ulva Ferry (33/1)

Verdict

Although Carqalin has yet to win a race, he has shaped well recently and can get involved off his low weight.. Burgess Dream likes this track and could go well on his return to fences, but the selection is FOR CARMEL, who ran well over farther last time and has room for improvement over fences. Veauce De Sivola is respected with his good claimer on board, while cases can also be made for top-weight Irish Octave and Very Live.
  1. For Carmel
  2. Carqalin
  3. Burgess Dream
