Was a ready winner over hurdles at Newcastle (2m½f, good to soft) from this mark two years ago and not disgraced in Grade 2 next time. After lengthy absence, proved his well being on Flat in the autumn. Has won on heavy. Short-listed.
Won back-to-back novices' contests at Sedgefield (2m5f/2m4f, inc. on heavy) early last year. Fell when still possible winner on handicap debut at Newcastle next time and held from 2lb lower when last seen. May still improve. Not ruled out.
All three hurdles wins have been on good to soft (at up to this trip). Best of those was from 3lb lower last season at Lingfield. Handles soft, unraced on heavy. Ran well at Kempton in decent contest last time. Each-way claims from 2lb higher.
Has a good record on testing ground and stays 3m1½f over hurdles. Up 10lb since winning at Cartmel in May, after two good chase runs. Consistent and certainly not ruled out.
Pulled up in better company at Haydock last time, but began this season in good form when sticking on well to score over C&D in November. 10lb higher today, but this looks more his level and couldn't rule out more improvement.
Former multiple Grade 2 winner over hurdles in Ireland, though has not won since April 2015. Well beaten at Ayr on his first complete start for this trainer and cheek pieces need to make a big difference today to turn that around.
Goes well on soft ground and put in a very respectable effort on heavy at Haydock (2m7f) last time, having gone up 9lb for springing a surprise here over C&D in November. Drop in trip should help and another good run anticipated.
Has been a latecomer to rules racing but that doesn't appear to have held her back, having won two novices' hurdles at Newcastle (2m4½f/2m6f on soft) last season. Well beaten from 3lb higher on reappearance but could do better today.
Dual bumper winner who was beaten just 3¼L in a Grade 1 in that sphere in 2016. Yet to reach that level over hurdles and beaten favourite from this mark on handicap debut at Carlisle in November. Remains of interest and not ruled out.
Ran on well to win a Carlisle novices' hurdle (2m1f, soft) by 4L in October and produced his best yet at Doncaster (2m3½f, good) last time. Still open to improvement and will need it after 5lb rise, but enters calculations.
2-2 over C&D in novices' hurdles for Mark Walford last season, including on soft. Handicapper has had him in his pocket since then, but back here, possibly rejuvenated by switch of stable and 15lb lower than original mark, he could be a contender.
Forecasts
Westend Story (2/1), Jaleo (4/1), Slanelough (9/2), Craggaknock (8/1), Diamond Fort (9/1), Zaidiyn (14/1), Becky The Thatcher (16/1), Bollin Ace (16/1), Morning Royalty (50/1), Dedigout (66/1), Catchamat (66/1)
A decent betting heat in prospect as several of them have claims. Zaidiyn is one of those after proving he is over whatever ailed him and he enters the short-list along with Bollin Ace, Diamond Fort and Becky The Thatcher. Westend Story has been a shade disappointing over hurdles, given what he promised in bumpers, but he is feared from this mark after a sighter last time. Slanelough is going the right way and should be heavily involved, but the suggestion is to side with course specialist CRAGGAKNOCK, who has slid to a mark that he looks capable of handling. The market should be a good guide as to whether he is ready to do himself justice on his debut for Richard Guest.
- Craggaknock
- Zaidiyn
- Slanelough
