Won twice at Worcester in July but raised a total of 20lb for the two wins and struggled subsequently at Wetherby. Questions to answer now off this mark.

Chti Balko216
Age: 5|  Weight: 11-10| J: Lorcan Murtagh(3)| T: D McCain Jnr| OR:  135| D
9/2
Won novice races at Catterick and Haydock early in the year before outclassed in Aintree Grade One to conclude novice season. Opening handicap mark looks workable so he is worth consideration on return.

Poppy Kay208
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-4| J: Sean Houlihan(8)| T: P Hobbs & J White| OR:  129| D
3/1
Won twice in her novice season last time round before a close second in a valuable mares only contest at Haydock. Seems versatile ground wise and could be capable here despite rapidly rising handicap mark.

Barmanh8(ex 7)
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-2| J: Alan Doyle(10)| T: N J Henderson| OR:  120| D

7lb penalty for Taunton win sees him 1lb wrong at the weights today. That small field contest was his fifth hurdles success to date. Seems to appreciate quick ground and this a tougher ask.
5

Sea Wallh244
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-9| J: James Bowen(3)| T: C Gordon| OR:  120| D
4/1
Won last three races of last season (one hurdle, two chases). 7lb higher than last winning hurdle mark but won off this in the past so reason for optimism although he prefers deep ground.
6
Horse silk
Volpone Jeloisp163
Age: 4|  Weight: 10-8| J: Alexander Thorne(8)| T: P F Nicholls| OR:  119| D
7/1
Former French trained gelding was never out of the first four in nine races for this yard last season. Competitive off similar marks on several occasions and has youth on his side so must enter reckoning if ready after summer break.

Forecasts

Barman (5/2), Poppy Kay (3/1), Sea Wall (4/1), Chti Balko (9/2), Volpone Jelois (7/1), Utility (10/1)

Verdict

Second season hurdlers are set to dominate this contest and CHTI BALKO looks worth chancing on his handicap debut. He won novice hurdles easily at Catterick and Haydock and he could easily have more to come this time round. Poppy Kay is another leading contender. She strolled to success on her handicap debut and almost overcame a hefty rise at Haydock in a valuable contest. Paul Nicholls' Volpone Jelois must also enter the reckoning, as the youngest horse in the lineup and in receipt of weight from all.
  1. Chti Balko
  2. Poppy Kay
  3. Volpone Jelois
