Has won on heavy ground, stays further than this and has won first time after a break. Those positives are countered slightly by the fact that he is 2lb higher than his best winning mark and with joint topweight on this going it will be tough.
Won a couple of races for Philip Hobbs in 2013. Went 24 races and through hands of two other trainers before this one found a race for him at Hexham, when he won by a distance (2m4f, heavy). 18lb rise looks steep, but no denying how well he won.
Gone back in the right direction since joining this trainer and ran up a hat-trick last winter at trips over 3m. In grip of the handicapper since, but drops to a mark from which he may be more competitive. Ground may bring his stamina to the fore.
Won four hurdles and a chase at up to 2m3½f on good/very soft ground in France. Has lost his way in the past year and handicapper has been in total control since he arrived in Britain. Return to this trip may help, but looks one to watch at present.
Has an in-and-out record of late, with a good run followed by some sort of mishap. Picked up winning prize money when his only opponent departed at the first last time. Handicapper has left his mark alone, so he has claims again if he can complete.
Won a couple of chases at Southwell in the winter (1m7½f) including on soft. Handicapper has been in control since and a 2lb rise for a good effort at Haydock when last seen in May does not look like helping.
Handles heavy ground, though is without a win since back-to-back successes at Ayr over hurdles almost two years ago. Now 2lb lower than the second of those, stays 3m, goes well fresh and cheekpieces could make a difference. Interesting.
Has a couple of heavy ground successes on his CV, both over a bit further than this and is now 8lb lower than the latter. Ran well from 4lb higher at Wetherby in January, but not able to go on from that and has a fair bit to prove.
Mudlark who scored over C&D this time last year from the same mark as today. Has twice been in the frame since then when back over C&D from 5lb higher. If back on song after a recent pipe-opener he could again have a major say.
Sole chase win came almost two years ago at Market Rasen (2m5½f, soft), when rated 8lb higher. Has rarely threatened to emulate that, but handles heavy ground and he is now on his lowest mark since 2012. Not ruled out.
Forecasts
Western Jo (3/1), Never Up (5/1), Calivigny (5/1), Dartford Warbler (15/2), Tikkandemickey (8/1), Nortonthorpelegend (9/1), Mumgos Debut (12/1), Sharney Sike (14/1), Rowdy Rocher (14/1), Rouge Et Sage (50/1)
Rowdy Rocher should again give a good account in this, although the fact that he has not yet been able to win from this high tips the scales against him slightly. Western Jo put a yawning gap between he and his field at Hexham, though an 18lb rise is a pretty hefty reassessment to have to overcome. Nortonthorpelegend could get involved, though this trip looks a bit on the short side, while Mumgos Debut should be thereabouts again granted a clear round. Calivigny is on an attractive mark and a win would not surprise, though the suggestion is TIKKANDEMICKEY, who loves the mud, goes well here and is back on his last winning mark.
- Tikkandemickey
- Calivigny
- Rowdy Rocher
