Managed to capitalise on some good hurdles form when taking the runner-up slot on her first couple of Flat outings this year. That form has gradually ebbed away though and she was below her best last time coming back off a break.
Looked a real improver when scoring at Ripon in August but her attempt to follow-up was thwarted by a return that came too quickly. Resumed winning ways with a taking effort at Redcar over 1m2f but can she put back-to-back wins together is the question.
A winner of four races this year (three in handicaps; one over C&D) this will require another career best although she has struck up a good partnership with today's rider. Made all to win last time but might not get her own way here off a 4lb higher mark.
Positive tactics and a drop to 1m2f saw his resume his progress which looked as though it might get spoilt by some wayward tendencies (settled much better). Proved a disappointing favourite last time though reverting to his old ways; care needed.
Continues to go through the motions despite the fact that the handicapper is giving him every chance (8lb below his last winning mark). Now tried in blinkers (has worn all sorts of headgear) in an attempt to find the key to him again.
In good heart at the moment and looked better than ever when winning at Bath in July over 1m6f (won with a bit in hand) off 64. Shaped far better than the final result last time in better company (travelled well) and one to be interested in here.
Yard have struggled this year (just two wins) but he did provide one of those wins in June taking advantage of a fall in the weights. Fared poorly since though and now back in cheekpieces that he wore when winning at Wetherby.
A triple scorer on the AW last year at Newcastle he shaped well enough on his first run for this yard again at Newcastle. Returned to turf for his next start though he ran as if he was amiss and he was eased off to finish last; best watched now.
Now 17 runs since his last win but has threatened on a couple of occasions to end that run and his much reduced mark is now 13lb below his last winning one. Ran one of his lesser races last time out though and it would be difficult to back him with confidence.
Forecasts
Crushed (5/2), Fire Leopard (3/1), Modernism (5/1), Desert Cross (6/1), All My Love (17/2), Correggio (16/1), Percys Princess (20/1), Auxiliary (28/1), The Resdev Way (66/1)
The second division of the 1m4f handicap and this one holds as much interest as the first with Fire Leopard setting a good standard but can she put back-to-back wins together off what is a relatively short break. Percys Princess has struck up an excellent partnership with rider Jane Elliott with the pair 4/7 this year but Mick Appleby’s mare will need another career best here. Crushed needs a mention but he can race very freely and you would want to see him settle before getting involved with him while Modernism and Correggio are well handicapped on their old form if they did come back to life. The Jonjo O’Neill stable has been going well over the jumps of late and his DESERT CROSS makes plenty of appeal here based on his last couple of runs and this looks an ideal test for him after he was a little unlucky last time when hampered and losing his chance.
- Desert Cross
- Percys Princess
- Fire Leopard
