A major surprise that this colt has seemingly regressed since a fine second to Brittanic over 7f here in December 2016, with connections scratching their heads with regards his best trip. Fully capable if he can put it all back together.

Formerly with Dermot Weld but not shown much since joining this yard for 22,000 gns in July. AW debut.

33/1
£46,000 yearling by Phoenix Reach who has yet to beat a single rival in two career starts. Keen over 7f here latest, and a drop back in trip should suit, but that effort came in a very moderate contest.

Off the track since October 2016, this 19,000 gns yearling has plenty to prove in terms of his well-being, and his previous form doesn't amount to all that much in any case.

Fair form as both a juvenile and as a three-year-old when trained in Ireland by David Wachman (6f Cork handicap runner up off 85), but no show for Lucinda Egerton after two years off. Perhaps another new trainer can reinvigorate. Wears a hood.

Rated just 42 and difficult to imagine her as a potential winner on the strength of her efforts since a reasonable start to handicapping (from a low base) at Haydock in July.

Port Soif
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-0| J: P Makin| T: D O'Meara
5/1
Unraced second foal by Foxwedge out of Positivity. Cost 20,000 gns as a yearling and is a half-sister to 6f AW winner Cumbrianna. Wouldn't have to be overly special to make a winning debut in a very moderate contest.

Equiano filly who hasn't shown much in either of her two starts at Redcar (6f and 7f) and looks best watched for her switch to the AW.

Forecasts

The Great Wall (11/10), Arnarson (5/4), Pudding Chare (2/1), Port Soif (5/1), Golden Easter (7/1), Sexy Legs (10/1), Coviglia (12/1), Poet's Time (20/1), Encoded (25/1), Intoxikating (33/1), Spring Beauty (66/1)

Verdict

A very ordinary and winnable maiden, but unfortunately for punters the horses are all very much of a muchness. David O'Meara saddles a couple of runners, and the unraced Port Soif could be capable of making a winning debut, particularly if the market speaks in her favour, whilst Sexy Legs was useful in Ireland for David Wachman and will surely do better for Rebecca Menzies than Lucinda Egerton. However, one final opportunity can be given to ARNARSON. He should have done far better than he has since making a pleasing start to his career, but the combination of a return to Newcastle and the powerful Luke Morris in the saddle might just prove enough to convince him to put his best foot forward.
  1. Arnarson
  2. Port Soif
  3. Golden Easter
