Won over C&D on good to soft last month and was taken out of his follow-up attempt at Carlisle last week due to heavy ground. Has not yet shown his best when it is this slow, so has a bit to prove from a mark 5lb higher than last time.

Has so far raced only on fast ground at up to 1m3½f. Mark looks no more than fair for his handicap debut over a trip that will also ask questions of his stamina. Looks best watched unless market vibes are strong.

Was runner-up over C&D on fast ground in July when 1lb higher, so has a squeak on that basis, although was well beaten by Stanarley Pic when returning two starts ago. Acts with cut but anyone's guess as to which Jan De Heem will turn up.

Last four wins have all been over 2m, including here in April from 1lb lower. Claims on that basis. Handled soft ground reasonably well at Catterick earlier in the season, so if he can make this a decent test he could be in the shake-up.

Has two C&D wins to his name, the first of them on good to soft, though he has never won on soft ground. Now 2lb lower than his last win two years ago, but has seen no action since February last year. Likely to need this.

Well beaten in all starts so far, the last two being over this trip and the most recent on heavy ground. Headgear changed today but the portents are not good from the same mark as last time.

0-8 so far, but has been creeping closer to success in her last couple of starts. Was due to try this trip at Carlisle last week but taken out due to heavy ground. Will still have her stamina tested over this far on soft but has an each-way squeak.

1-22 and very difficult to win with. Has now slipped to a career-low mark, but recent form does not offer much encouragement that he is on the verge of a second success and soft ground is a further concern.

0-14 and his best efforts were both last year and over 1m2f (including on soft). Steps up to this trip for the first time and as a half-brother to a winner over it he may see it out. May have an each-way shout if seeing it out.

Taken out due to heavy ground at Carlisle last week and well held on both handicap starts to far over 2m. 3lb drop won't do any harm, but even if this shorter trip suits, she still has a fair bit more to do to get competitive.

Didn't get home when tried over 2m at Ripon last time out, so reverts to this trip having been well beaten on her only previous try at it. Might have each-way claims from this mark if she stays, but couldn't be confident she will do that.

Stays 2m over hurdles and ran well over 1m3½f on the Flat at Carlisle in July. However, far from certain to see this out, especially on soft ground, as he has only raced on good/good to firm on turf so far.

Forecasts

Stanarley Pic (4/1), Royal Headley (4/1), Princess Nearco (5/1), Jan De Heem (8/1), Celtic Power (9/1), Legalized (12/1), Cavalieri (12/1), Silver Gleam (14/1), Patent (16/1), Harvey's Hope (16/1), Grey Mist (25/1), Parkwarden (33/1)

Verdict

Lots of ifs and buts here, with several needing to prove their stamina and others their ability to handle soft ground. As a result, Stanarley Pic could again have a big chance despite a 5lb rise, though it might be worth chancing PATENT. Peter Niven's gelding acts on soft ground his pedigree suggests that he might be able to find a bit for this step up in trip, so he is a tentative selection. Harvey's Hope goes well here but has fitness to prove after a lengthy absence and Cavalieri may prove to be a bigger danger. Jan De Heem has the ability to go close but he is a risky proposition.
