Has made the frame on three occasions from 17 attempts, including in a Thirsk handicap over this trip two starts ago, from a mark of just 46. Would be a shock if he proved good enough.
Already on his third trainer and, having not raced for either Luca Cumani or Roger Varian. he has beaten only one of his 21 opponents home so far in a bumper and a maiden over 1m. Not easy to envisage him having the speed for this.
Improved on his Chelmsford debut when third at Kempton last time, both those races being over this trip. Sire was a fast ground specialist, but his dam has produced soft ground winners and if he handles it he looks set to go close.
His best effort so far was on soft ground when beaten just a head at Yarmouth (7f) in July. Also went well back there over this trip with cut in the ground last time and although exposed he looks capable of being competitive.
Yet to make the frame in six attempts and was last of seven, beaten 18½L on his only try on soft ground at Hamilton last time. Could be that the step up to 1m½f found him out, but either way he has plenty to prove.
Beaten favourite on debut at Newcastle in January and only seen once since, when occupying the same berth (beaten 2L) over 7½f at Beverley (good to firm) earlier in the month. Optimism from pedigree that he will handle soft ground and has claims.
Has shown very little in any of her 12 starts and never threatened to finish in the money. Not a great deal for her new trainer to work with, but he tries cheek pieces for the first time in the hope of at least eeking out some improvement.
25-1 and beaten 10½L on debut, having led for half a mile, here (7f, good to soft) last month. Needs to improve plenty on that to take a hand at the business end this time.
Forecasts
Van Velde (6/4), Essential (7/4), Gunmaker (7/2), Mighty Bond (16/1), Hamriyah (20/1), Spring Beauty (33/1), Subotal (50/1), Kylla (100/1)
A poor maiden where VAN VELDE is taken to come good at the third time of asking, now dropped in trip and on ground that he can hopefully go well on. Essential looks likely to prove a serious danger, while Gunmaker could be the one to complete the frame.
