It's well over two years since his sole win (Ayr, 6f, good to firm) and he has regressed since those Listed-placed days with Richard Hannon. Dropped in grade and on career-low mark for this first start for another stable and is worth a market check.

Scored at Ayr (6f, good to soft) last month from a 4lb lower mark. Upped in grade last time and failed to get competitive, so should appreciate this drop back, plus 2lb lower mark than at Hamilton and should be competitive.

6f and some cut in the ground are optimum conditions for this six-time winner, who did so most recently at Carlisle last month. Up 3lb for that, but has claims if able to run up to that level again.

Handles cut and although well held on his last two starts he probably wasn't quite up to that level at Ascot last time, while 7f found him out at Thirsk prior to that. A 2lb drop and the return to this grade/soft ground could prove fruitful.

Three of his five wins have been with cut in the ground, four of them over this trip. At just 1lb higher than his best winning mark and 4lb higher than his Thirsk win last month, he looks capable of being heavily involved again.

Handles good to soft, though genuine soft ground is probably not ideal. Comes here in decent form after a Pontefract win (6f, good) last month and a decent effort over 7f at York last time from today's mark. Claims.

Seems to go on any ground and certainly on soft. It was heavy when she recorded her last win, at Hamilton (6f) a year ago and she is now 8lb lower than that winning mark. Claims on that basis and is capable of going very close.

Yet to win on ground slower than good, so conditions would have to be a concern going into this. Scored over the trip from 6lb lower at Pontefract in June and two of his three subsequent runs give him each-way claims if he can act on this ground.

His sole success was on soft ground at Doncaster (6f) in June when 6lb lower. Held from this mark three times since and trainer now tries first-time headgear with Hanagan up to try to eek out a bit more improvement. Not ruled out.

Scored on soft ground at Thirsk last season and is effective over this trip. Now 8lb lower than that last success and on a losing run of nine, so despite another 2lb drop he has something to prove.

Has run well on soft ground, though his sole turf success was on good to firm. Dropped 1lb after a 3½L beating at Thirsk (6f, good to soft) on his first start for this yard last month and has claims.

Forecasts

Short Work (11/8), Metisian (13/2), Round The Island (8/1), Manatee Bay (9/1), Honeysuckle Lil (12/1), Madrinho (12/1), Danish Duke (16/1), Alfie's Angel (16/1), Perfect Symphony (20/1), Market Choice (28/1), Gypsy Major (50/1)

Verdict

Gypsy Major is one to note in the market now that he drops back to his last winning mark and he has claims, though the suggestion is HONEYSUCKLE LIL. Tim Easterby's mare relishes plenty of cut and this trip, while she is now on a dangerously low mark. Short Work is another for short-lists along with Perfect Symphony, Danish Duke, Madrinho and Manatee Bay in an open heat.
  1. Honeysuckle Lil
  2. Gypsy Major
  3. Perfect Symphony
