Scored on his second start in a Carlisle novices' event (6f, good to soft) before an abortive attempt over this far at Newcastle (beaten 13L). Good effort on soft ground at Hamilton (6f) last time and from 1lb lower he has claims back at this trip.

Took a couple of runs to come to hand but went close over 6f (good) at Thirsk in July and couldn't be too critical of his 4L fourth on nursery debut at Catterick last time. 2lb drop will help, as should the extra furlong. Each-way claims.

Best effort so far was over 1m½f at Nottingham last time (good) when beaten less than 4L into fourth. On that evidence you would have to argue that the handicapper has been very fair and she should not be far away on her nursery debut.

Showed steady improvement before finishing a ½L runner-up at Thirsk (6f, good to soft) in July. Took a step back when upped to 7½f at Beverley last time, so slightly shorter trip, 1lb drop and flat track may help him to make an impact again.

Goes well on soft ground, having won back-to-back sellers on it in the summer. Has also bagged a handicap over this trip since then and ran well in a better contest than this at Doncaster last time. 3lb drop will help and looks very competitive.

Her best efforts so far have been on good ground at Epsom (6f) and fast ground at Musselburgh (7f), so she has to prove herself on this much slower surface. Raised 1lb despite a lack lustre effort at Catterick last time but can't be ruled out.

Sole success to date was on soft ground at Ayr (6f) in June. Has so far been unable to make his presence felt in nurseries, both over further than today, so the drop in trip plus 3lb in the handicap may help, but he has a bit to prove.

Made significant improvement for his debut run when a 2L third at Thirsk (6f, good) next time. Ran to a similar level of form here (6f, good to firm) last time. Handicapper looks to have been fair for his nursery debut and he could be competitive.

Best effort so far was over 7f (soft) at Catterick two starts ago, but blinkers failed to assist him at Musselburgh last time when beaten 12L on his nursery debut. They are retained here and he is dropped 1lb. No reason why he can't do better.

Has made modest gains with each run, though on what we have seen her mark looks stiff enough for this nursery introduction. Nonetheless, her trainer has enjoyed plenty of success with horses of similar profile, so a market check is advised.

Forecasts

Placebo Effect (9/4), Byron's Choice (7/2), Emerald Rocket (5/1), Super Major (13/2), Dark Liberty (9/1), Show Princess (10/1), Reinbeau Prince (11/1), Mountain Approach (20/1), Jackontherocks (20/1), Sorority (25/1), Graphite Girl (66/1)

Verdict

Michael Dods has three representatives and the market should be a good guide as to which of them has the best chance, though Byron's Choice has the strongest form on paper by any of the trio. Mountain Approach has soft ground form over this trip and is very much respected, while Reinbeau Prince, Emerald Rocket and Sorority are others with claims. However, the handicapper may have taken a liberty with DARK LIBERTY, who may have got in lightly here and she is the suggestion on her nursery debut.
  1. Dark Liberty
  2. Mountain Approach
  3. Byron's Choice
