7/2
Regular pace setter who applied those tactics when scoring over the extended 7f at Beverley in May. Has retained his form from fairly similar marks since (runner up at Musselburgh the past twice) and makes the long journey south under an accomplished pilot who is able to claim (own stable) against less experienced riders.

Born To Finisht33
Age: 4|  Weight: 9-13| J: William Cox(3)| T: J A Osborne| OR:  68
8/1
A nine race maiden on turf and more effective over 6f on the AW (four time winner from 15 starts). Did okay when third over 6f in a similar contest at this track in June (fourth), but a little to find with Fine Example from Musselburgh.

Age: 4|  Weight: 9-13| J: S J Cummins(3)| T: J Tuite| OR:  68
14/1
12 race maiden who has appeared regressive during the course of 2017. Blinkers didn't appear to help last time and now tries the visor for the first time, and whilst falling in the weights, hardly appears an ideal candidate for a race in which whips can be carried but not used.

Eight race maiden who has placed form over longer trips (1m4f), but hasn't managed to beat a single rival in his last two starts. Drops sharply in trip and partnered by a jockey having only her fourth ride.

Bengal Lancer20
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-11| J: Manuel Fernandes| T: Ian Williams| OR:  71
5/2
Five race maiden who had shown a modicum of promise before running a career best race when beaten ½L by Another Boy at Sandown last month (7f good to soft). This trip is feasibly what he needs and an obvious chance if in the same shape.

Produced three very similar and fair efforts in maidens (1m) prior to her handicap debut (disappointing) at Chepstow last month. The drop in trip was probably less of a reason for that more moderate effort than the soft ground, and any excessive rainfall could prove troublesome.

Altiko Tommy35
Age: 3|  Weight: 9-7| J: Jason Watson(5)| T: George Baker| OR:  67| D

A dual AW winner from lower marks (7f and 1m) who returns to turf for the first time since finishing a nose second to Madam Prancealot in a 6f Lingfield nursery 12 months ago.

Age: 4|  Weight: 9-5| J: Nicola Currie(3)| T: B G Powell| OR:  60
50/1
Limited promise in maidens for previous trainer Andrew Balding, and hasn't beaten a single rival in three starts in handicaps since joining this stable. Plummeting in the weights and the tongue tie is applied for the first time.

12/1
6f Wolverhampton maiden fillies stakes winner for David Simcock in January, but moved on thereafter and slow to make an impression for her new yard. However, she gave some optimism for the future in finishing fourth (albeit well beaten) at Sandown latest, but more needed.

Age: 4|  Weight: 9-3| J: Pierre-Louis Jamin(5)| T: J G Portman| OR:  58| CD
9/1
Appreciates some ease in the ground and was successful for this rider over C&D in May (from a 2lb lower mark). A largely mixed bag since in five subsequent starts and could really do with ditching the tendency to start slowly.

Welsh Inlet11
Age: 9|  Weight: 9-1| J: Sophie Ralston(5)| T: J J Bridger| OR:  56| CD
16/1
A ten time career winner (including over C&D in a similar race in May 2014). Went close when downed by a head at Brighton in mid June (7f good to firm) but not so effective since despite being a usual regular and reliable conveyance for inexperienced riders.

Virile83
Age: 6|  Weight: 9-1| J: Finley Marsh| T: S Kirk| OR:  56
20/1
In decent order during April and early May, making the frame on four successive occasions and feasibly handicapped on those efforts. However, disappointing thereafter and it's quite possible that the short break will have freshened him up. Won just once on turf in 24 starts.

Greyjoy4
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-4| J: Shariq Mohd(7)| T: S Kirk| OR:  45
66/1
A 14 race maiden who is yet to make the frame and races from out of the weights, lining up for a jockey that has had just two previous rides, so very difficult to build a case for.

Forecasts

Bengal Lancer (5/2), Fine Example (7/2), Characterized (7/1), Born To Finish (8/1), Intimately (9/1), Moonshine Dancer (12/1), Topology (14/1), Altiko Tommy (14/1), Welsh Inlet (16/1), Virile (20/1), Ceyhan (33/1), Mr Andros (50/1), Greyjoy (66/1)

Verdict

Experience in the saddle generally counts for plenty in these type of races, and for that reason alone, Fine Example must figure high upon the shortlist with the fast emerging Seamus Cronin able to claim 3lb (rides for his own stable) against less experienced riders. Furthermore, the fact that Kevin Ryan elects to send his representative on the long journey south adds further strength to the argument for supporting the top-weight. However, in the shape of BENGAL LANCER he meets a less exposed rival. This Hellvelyn gelding produced a career best effort when upped to this trip at Sandown for the first time last month, and with the proficient Manuel Fernandes in the saddle should take any further rainfall firmly in his stride.
