This trainer has yet to find the answer to this former John Gosden trained gelding, but whilst he's falling steadily in the weights he hadn't looked all that encouraging until his most recent start at Newcastle. Holds an outside chance in a weak race.

Not run on the Flat since August 2014 when with Brian Ellison and has established himself over hurdles and fences since then winning a further three races, including at Hexham in May. Hard to know what to expect, but this mark could be exploitable in a weak race, and it will be a very shrewd piece of placing if that proves the case.

Not shown a great deal since switched from France (John Hammond), but dropping in the weights and upped in trip are possible reasons to suggest improvement, but his stable could be in better form overall.

Not beaten all that far and has made the frame in a couple of maidens over the extended mile at Wolverhampton and Beverley. Probably lacks a change of gear, so no reason why he shouldn't handle this trip, and couldn't have been found a weaker race in which to make his handicap debut.

Formerly with Mick Channon, and ran his best race for this trainer when a nearest at the finish fourth of seven to Amy Blair at Hamilton earlier this month. Upped in trip, but the indication is that he stays. Drawn wide.

The likely market mover given his trainers fine record with newcomers, and was twice a runner up over the extended 1m3f at Limerick for previous trainer Joseph O'Brien earlier in the year. Both of those form lines have been franked with the respective winners Tilly's Chilli and Hyperdrive winning since. Could be thrown in from this mark.

Much better since switched to handicaps, and a runner up on each of his two starts in this kind of company so far. Both over those races have come over 1m, but this €275,000 juvenile is bred to stay and should be considered from just a 2lb higher mark.

Falling in the weights, and contested a stronger race than this over 1m2f at Newmarket earlier in the month, but overall hasn't shaped like a major improver and others appear far likelier winners.

Shown nothing in five starts to suggest improvement is imminent, but dropped another 3lb and goes beyond 7f for the very first time (stamina in his pedigree).

Showed nothing at big odds in three maidens, but better on handicap debut (from this mark) at Beverley when third to Metronomic last month (good). Trainer saddled a double at Beverley on Monday where this lightly raced gelding was declared a non-runner. Likely player in a very winnable contest.

Forecasts

Luminous (11/4), Epitaph (4/1), Sir Gnet (4/1), Broughtons Knight (4/1), Tread Lightly (10/1), Mr C (14/1), Akkadian Empire (14/1), Satish (16/1), Vodka Wells (20/1), Almunther (20/1), Shakabula (33/1)

Verdict

A race which probably won't capture the imagination of many, and in truth few make obvious appeal. Mr C looked to have a decent winning opportunity at Beverley on Monday on an afternoon when his trainer saddled a double, but was taken out to come here instead so must be respected off bottom weight. Sir Gnet has proved disappointing given his sales price and pedigree, but he needs to be on the premises at this level whilst Luminous has been found a weak race in which to make her handicap debut. Nevertheless, the stand out horse is the former Joseph O'Brien trained EPITAPH. Now with Mick Appleby (known to improve stable switchers) he's potentially thrown in from a mark of 68 with both of his Limerick conquerors going on to achieve much better things in Ireland since.

  3. Sir Gnet
