Having shown some useful form in maidens over shorter trips his two handicaps starts have come over longer trips (1m3f). Plenty of promise was shown in his last run at Windsor where he was slow away in his second handicap start but showed he could be competitive off this mark and is of interest here.
As with a few from this yard better is expected when stepped up in trip and into handicap company and he holds a few subsequent entries. Ran well over C&D last time off a 2lb lower mark and finding plenty for pressure although the cheekpieces go on for the first time here and a bold show is expected again from this improving stayer.
Ran some fair races for Mark Johnston without winning in maidens but failed to run any sort of race (his first since being gelded) for his new yard on handicap debut. Raced in snatches in that race and struggled (has plenty to do with Veiled Secret) and no surprise to see the headgear reached for here for the first time.
Ran three times for Roger Charlton in maidens last year looking as though he was a slow burner over races up to a mile. Stepped up to 1m2f on his handicap/stable debut after a break and being gelded he was far too free to make an impression and will need to settle better here.
His form in maidens was only fair at best but he put up a much better performance when taking the runner-up slot in his second handicap start at Wetherby over this trip. Shaped like a real stayer there and could take a hand of a 3lb higher mark.
Makes his turf debut here having run one of his better races on his final maiden start at Chelmsford taking the runner-up slot in a small field (failed to settle that well). Tried over this far on handicap debut he again ran too free but settled better last time out and looks as though a return to this trip will suit and could well get things together at some stage.
Showed his best form yet on his second handicap start over 1m4f at Salisbury last time out having shaped with promise on handicap debut over 2f shorter. Should do well over trips like this but doesn't yet look the finished article and one for the future.
All his maiden form came at up to a mile and he failed to make much of an impression on his handicap debut at Brighton in June over 1m2f. Takes a rise in grade here and not one of the more obvious solutions to this race with others looking to have better chances.

Veiled Secret (1/1), Sussex Ranger (7/2), The Secrets Out (5/1), Padrinho (6/1), Magic Beans (6/1), Gee Sixty Six (14/1), Franny Nisbet (14/1), Leapt (20/1), Pushjockeypush (25/1), Haldaw (25/1), Avantgardist (33/1)
There look to be some interesting options in this staying handicap that concludes the card with Veiled Secret the most obvious of them after his second here last time out although he doesn’t look the easiest of rides. Gee Sixty Six and Magic Beans could well do better in the future and look worth noting in the betting. The Secrets Out faces a tougher task here than he’s had of late with Padrinho also one that should get in the mix. Overall though SUSSEX RANGER showed he could be competitive off this mark last time out and for a trainer who is always respected with his runners here is the suggestion in this contest.
- Sussex Ranger
- Veiled Secret
- Padrinho
