Useful handicap hurdler at his best, unsurprisingly was unable to lay a glove on Altior on chase debut at Kempton last year but made light of an easy task at Fontwell last time. That told us little we didn't already know, but this trip fine, and won't mind a bit of rain.

Has his quirks and has refused to start in the past (slowly away last time out) but useful when he's on a going day and couldn't have won any easier at Towcester last time out. That form needs improving on, but he's at least set to play a part in a weak event.

No win in 38 chase starts tells you all you need to know about him, rated miles behind the best of these will be doing well to be within hailing distance of them at the finish.

13/8
Useful handicap hurdler (placed in the Tote Silver Trophy at Chepstow last year) and has made a satisfactory, if unspectacular start to his chasing career, finishing runner up at both Kempton and Towcester. Gets a useful bit of weight from the top two but needs the rain to stay away for best chance.

Was struggling from a very early stage at Newton Abbot on chase debut a fortnight ago and hard to recommend on that. Should be fighting it out with Finch Flyer for fourth barring accidents.

Forecasts

Black Corton (10/11), Forever Field (13/8), Newton Geronimo (6/1), Valshan Time (150/1), Finch Flyer (150/1)

Verdict

The first thing to say about this card is that the ground conditions may well change before race time, with heavy showers predicted through the night and into the morning. Caution is advised if placing bets early. BLACK CORTON makes the most appeal of those with form, having jumped well in the main at Fontwell and is probably a bit more adaptable as regards ground conditions than his main two rivals, Forever Field and Newton Geronimo, both of whom have their quirks. Forever Field holds a solid chance at the weights but his resolution is now in question. Newton Geronimo needs to behave himself at the start.
  1. Black Corton
  2. Forever Field
  3. Newton Geronimo
