12/1
Seven time winner who notched a quick double in May 2016 (Southwell chase and Towcester hurdle), but has badly lost his way since. Endured a torrid winter campaign (twice pulled up and twice last), so has plenty of questions to answer.

Age: 14|  Weight: 11-12| J: R Johnson| T: R McNally| OR:  100| CD
5/1
Teenager who was last successful in a handicap hurdle at this track in March 2016 (soft). Took many runs to work back to form this year, but showed a shade more over hurdles latest. A surprise to see him back over fences in light of a free-falling hurdles mark and unlikely to be good enough.

Sports a solid record of eight from 26 in Point-to-Points, and 3m would appear to be his ideal trip. Lacks experience under rules, but did win a Cartmel maiden hunters chase in May 2014. Stable debut.

Comfortably held when third to Charlie Wingnut at Kelso last month (3m good) on only his second ever start over fences. Not the most convincing hurdler, but did win twice in 2016, including over 2m at this track, so not inconceivable he has place claims.

Age: 9|  Weight: 10-13| J: Jamie Hamilton(3)| T: Mrs A C Hamilton| OR:  87
9/1
0 from 25 under rules (has won two Point-to-Points) and in the main fairly dismal over fences since Boxing Day 2016. Fallen in the weights to a career low of 87 and perhaps the only glimmer of light came at Ayr in January (well held third when unseating rider at the last).

My Ideap,t14
Age: 11|  Weight: 10-10| J: Dale Irving(3)| T: M A Barnes| OR:  84| D
11/4
Veteran, but his trainer has seldom left Hexham without a winner (or more) during 2017, and whilst he's been a shade below par for a while can't be ruled out of contention. Placed here in October 2016 from a mark of 98 and now rated just 84 and was only beaten 5L by Chain Of Beacons on similar ground at Newcastle in April.

Roman Numeral14
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-7| J: Nathan Moscrop(5)| T: D Thompson| OR:  81
17/2
Three from 39 over hurdles and not won since his Irish days in 2014, but unexposed over fences. Took a crashing fall at Sedgefield on Boxing Day and whilst well beaten by Dica latest that race could have served as a confidence booster. Overall unconvincing.

Trouble In Parisp31
Age: 10|  Weight: 10-0| J: Lorcan Murtagh(7)| T: F P Murtagh| OR:  67
12/1
Has flattered to deceive on more than one occasion but finds little at the business end of races usually finishing weakly. Another one to treat with extreme caution (34 race rules maiden) although he'll probably move into the race with a chance at some point.

Notonebuttwop14
Age: 10|  Weight: 10-0| J: Callum Bewley(3)| T: Kenny Johnson| OR:  65
14/1
A shadow of his former self (regular at Newcastle in 2013/14) and looks out of love with the game. His Kelso fourth came in selling company and he refused to race here over 3m last month. Likely suited by the fact that this 2m4f start isn't directly in front of the enclosures.

Forecasts

My Idea (11/4), Fred Le Macon (9/2), See Double You (5/1), Roman Numeral (17/2), Danehills Well (9/1), Sposalizio (9/1), Trouble In Paris (12/1), Ever So Much (12/1), Notonebuttwo (14/1)

Verdict

Division 2 of this 2m4f Handicap Chase looks far weaker than Division 1, and the vast majority of this field have little or nothing to recommend with. Therefore, with Maurice Barnes knocking winners in left, right and centre at Hexham this year, the well handicapped veteran MY IDEA fits the profile of a likely winner in a dire contest. He ran with some credit at Newcastle in April and does handle this track effectively.
