Enjoying a superb spring campaign with wins at Pontefract (1m2f, good), Wolverhampton (1m1½f, AW) and most recently Hamilton (1m1f, soft) last week. Carries a penalty for that last win here and will need to raise his game another notch to defy it.

Haydock specialist, with all four wins coming here over C&D, two of them on good to soft. 7lb higher than the latest and best of those and he was well beaten from just 1lb higher than this mark last time. However, back here he might still be capable of having a say if he can produce a career best effort.

Acts on good to soft and has won on heavy, although perhaps the best of his form is when the going is on the fast side of good. Nonetheless, went well in defeat at Ripon (1m2f, good to soft) last time and from 2lb lower the handicapper is giving him his best chance for some time.

Up in grade here after winning at both Doncaster (1m2f, good to soft) and Sandown (1m2f, good to firm) in the past couple of months. Raised 5lb for that Esher success and will need to produce some improvement in this field if he is to follow-up.

Effective over this trip for some years now and goes into this on the same mark as his most recent win, at Nottingham in September (1m2f, good). Acts on good to soft too showed signs that his next success may not be far away when beaten less than 2L at Redcar last time.

Won a Newcastle maiden (1m2f, AW) in March and acts with cut in the ground, but previous handicapping efforts have proved abortive from lower marks, so this looks tough on his first start for this trainer.

Sole Flat win was on fast ground Salisbury over this trip last summer. Has picked up two hurdles since, including one on good to soft, so conditions should not be a problem. Should be competitive from this mark, though has been beaten from 1lb lower and may just find one or two too good.

Made the frame over this at Chelmsford from 3lb higher in January, and it is only a year or so since he won at Chester (1m2½f, good) from 6lb higher. Won't mind the ground, but does have a bit to prove despite that more attractive-looking mark.

Both his wins have been over this trip and on good ground, but he goes well with cut underfoot too. Races from the same mark as when beaten just over 2L last time (1m4f, soft) at Doncaster and is he can make this into a test he should have a big say.

Sole success was over 1m4f on good to soft at Ffos Las a couple of seasons ago for Andrew Balding. Still 2lb higher than that after some decent placed form. Was a 1½L fourth over this sort of trip at Chester in September and if he can get back to that level then he would have claims, though recent efforts not encouraging.

Front pair were 5L clear when he finished within 1L of the winner at Wetherby (1m2f, soft) last week as one of the joint-favourites. From the same mark today he looks to have claims, although this is a stronger contest.

Forecasts

Gulf Of Poets (7/2), Caponova (9/2), So Celebre (9/2), Boycie (13/2), Arithmetic (7/1), Auspicion (8/1), Azzir (10/1), Jacbequick (10/1), Save The Bees (16/1), Brandon Castle (28/1), Lopes Dancer (40/1), Berlusca (40/1)

Verdict

Gulf Of Poets is in cracking form but needs improvement to complete a four-timer, while the handicapper is also asking pretty serious questions of course specialist Capanova and both look vulnerable. Jacbequick and Boycie each make some appeal, though the latter too has to raise the bar. Save The Bees is on a handy mark again and Auspicion should have a say, though AZZIR will probably get the decent pace that he will want over this trip and looks nicely treated now, so he is the suggestion.
  1. Azzir
  2. Jacbequick
  3. Save The Bees
