Smart performer over stamina sapping trips (previous Queen Alexandra winner) who likes to go from the front. Didn't really fire in some tough handicaps in 2016 and his only win came in a 2m2f Conditions stakes at Pontefract in October in a race where the favourite (runner -up) looked less than keen. Not seen since running on the AW in December and yet to win off a mark this high in a handicap.

Very progressive sort who never stopped improving last year with his win at Doncaster in October over 1m5f making him favourite for his one subsequent run in the November handicap over 1m4f. Can look a little lazy during his races but that just masks his strong finishing effort although he probably needs a decent pace to aim at.

Runs for some very shrewd connections who have done well with their purchases with similar types. This one was a useful performer for Peter Chapple-Hyam and was given a gentle reintroduction to action when running at Doncaster over 1m2f recently. This run may well reveal more as to how much ability remains and well worth watching in the market.

Represents the smallest yard in this but one that is in smashing form at the moment winning with three of their last four runners. Showed his best form last year when winning at York over 2m (second start for the yard) last year off a mark of 88 (might have been suited by his prominent track position). Ran creditably after that in a couple of big staying handicaps and looked to have a tough return to action this year (ran well) when 50/1 in a conditions race at Doncaster, that run (if believed) leaves him well in here off a mark of 93; the third and fourth have been winners next time out.

9/2
Typical type from this yard who stepped up in trip and into handicaps showed marked improvement as a three-year-old winning handicaps off increasing marks (57-73) and trip (made favourite every time). Those wins came in lesser grade that he faces today but he did overcome a 14lb rise last time to beat three rivals over 1m6f at Chelmsford completing a hat-trick. Steps up again in class here and runs off a career high mark but a fascinating contender in a complex little heat.

Forecasts

Cape Cova (15/8), Saigon City (9/4), Cartwright (9/2), Farquhar (5/1), Oriental Fox (12/1)

Verdict

Just a small field but a fascinating contest between the five none of which can be totally ruled out although Oriental Fox does look to have a tough test conceding weight to two improving four-year-olds in CARTWRIGHT and Cape Cova with the former just shading the argument on the grounds of fitness. Saigon City will be dangerous in handicaps off this mark if he can repeat his Doncaster form and with Farquhar worthy of respect for connections who have turned around plenty of horses from other yards.
  1. Cartwright
  2. Cape Cova
  3. Saigon City
