Hooded for the first time and has the plum draw right next to the rails as he comes back from a fair absence. Winner of a 5f Newcastle maiden on just his second start he disappointed on his handicap debut but hard to write off coming from this yard.

Finally broke a long losing run when taking a 5f Ripon handicap off a 2lb lower mark last September without ever looking like one that would follow-up. Shaped as if he would be better for the run on his seasonal return back over the same C&D as he was seen for his last win. Does like to go from the front so the wide draw even in this small field isn't an advantage.

May well have had a slight fitness advantage when winning over C&D last time out looking as good as ever. Increase of 5lb makes this a tougher contest but he's a consistent sort and should still make his presence felt.

The losing run continues to grow as quickly as the handicap mark falls and although he still has ability he's not the horse he was in his pomp. His last two runs have shown that he still has ability and could win something like this but a losing run of three years starts to leave doubts.

Profile is rather up and down and he's not the easiest to catch right. Form so far this year looks rather ordinary and he meets some in form rivals.

This is a yard that do well with sprinters and he showed some of his best form at the end of last season with a brace of wins over 5f (both with cut in the ground) with one win coming over C&D. Has run relatively well this year but looked to be on the way back to his best when third to Royal Brave over C&D last time out.

Generally finds this grade too tough and it his last success was gained on the 0-65 grade. Has work to do with a couple of these in recent C&D running and he'll be seen to better effect back at Ayr later in the year in a lesser grade.

Forecasts

Desert Ace (7/2), Alsvinder (7/2), Royal Brave (4/1), One Boy (5/1), Lucky Beggar (13/2), Silvanus (8/1), Star Cracker (16/1)

Verdict

A rather tightly knit little contest and its rather hard to rule many of them out. Lucky Beggar really ought to be able to win off this mark but the losing run is getting rather long now. Desert Ace and One Boy are more than capable at this level with Alsvinder the dark horse in the race. All in all though and despite the 5lb rise ROYAL BRAVE may well be able to follow-up his win here last time out as he looked in good form and his run style is suited by this C&D.
  1. Royal Brave
  2. One Boy
  3. Alsvinder
