Still 2lb higher than when winning a selling handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot almost two years ago. Losing run now up to 13, though has made the frame a few times. Looks in need of further assistance from the handicapper.

You have to go back to November 2013 for his last win and his only close call since was over fences in 2015. Not a bad effort at Leicester in January when a 6L third over 2m6½f against chasers, but well beaten from 2lb higher last time and hard to enthuse about his chance.

Last win under rules was in a Leicester chase two years ago, though has won a point-to-point since. Recent efforts over fences not great. Reverts to hurdles, where his last run was when runner-up here in December 2014 from a mark of 104. Looks well treated on that, though have to be doubts that he can reproduce it.

0-8 so far and another yet to make the frame. Just his third handicap start here and the assessor has relented and dropped him 7lb now for his previous two defeats. Becoming interesting with the yard going well and a much better effort would not surprise in this weak contest.

Goes well at this venue as evidenced by his 2m2½f win in November from 7lb lower. Backed that up at Taunton next time over 3m, but well beaten both starts since, including from this mark last time. Looks in the grip of the assessor for now.

Made the frame at Towcester last month, though beaten 34L there and handicapping attempts have so far proved abortive from only 3lb higher than today, including with 10lb claimer up. Looks one to take on again this time.

3-42 over hurdles, winning most recently at Newton Abbot in August from 1lb lower (2m1f, good). Only just held from a higher mark than today a couple of starts later, before form tailed off. Has had a break now and stable going well, so more than capable of being involved off bottom weight.

Forecasts

Triopas (15/8), Ice Konig (7/2), Monderon (5/1), Two Hoots (11/2), Boss In Boots (7/1), Civitesses (8/1), Culm Counsellor (10/1), Mount Vesuvius (12/1), Here Comes Molly (14/1)

Verdict

A weak race where it might be worth taking a chance on TRIOPAS following another drop in the weights and with his stable's runners going well. Mount Vesuvius should do better now freshened up and if he can run to something like his best then he is on a decent mark. Boss In Boots looks well treated on his old hurdles form, though you couldn't be dogmatic about him reproducing it right on cue for this return to the smaller obstacles.
  1. Triopas
  2. Mount Vesuvius
  3. Boss In Boots
