Age: 6|  Weight: 9-7| J: Josephine Gordon| T: J D Bethell| OR:  85
25/1
Shock 50/1 winner of a 1m maiden fillies stakes at Haydock on debut in April 2014, and highly tried at Listed level over 1m and 1m2f in the months that followed. However, not seen in action since June 2014 (wandering and eased), so impossible to know what to expect on her return to action (AW debut) at this more realistic level.

2/1
A ¾L winner of a 1m1f Carlisle maiden in August 2016 for Mark Johnston (multiple AW winner Go George Go fourth). Bought by this trainer for 26,000 gns at Newmarket in October 2016, and respected on stable and AW debut upped marginally in trip.

Age: 5|  Weight: 9-6| J: Jim Crowley| T: J D Bethell| OR:  84
4/1
C&D winner in May 2016 (from a 14lb lower mark), but did progress thereafter winning over 1m at York in July and finishing midfield in the Silver Cambridgeshire at Newmarket in September. Others would appear more attractively weighted, but effective here with course AW record reading: 1,2,2,6.

9/2
In good form at this track since upped to 1m4f in January 2017, winning twice (in a maiden and in a Class 4 handicap). However, this smooth travelling sort doesn't always fully produce the goods late in the day, and he was hanging inside the final furlong when a beaten 6/4f (third) from this mark last time. Drops back in trip.

Age: 6|  Weight: 9-2| J: P Mulrennan| T: Miss P Robson| OR:  80
11/2
Hurdles winner who has run three sound races at this track in 2017. A short head winner over 1m4f in February (beat High On Light), he got going a shade too late when just failing to reel in Codeshare here early last month. Will need plenty of luck in running over this shorter trip from a 3lb higher mark in order to go one better.

Formerly trained in France by Mme C Head-Mareek, and picked up by this Beverley handler at the Newmarket October sales for 28,000 gns. Was doing all of his best work late when 1¼L second to Glorious Power in a 1m Lingfield maiden last month, and by Motivator will appreciate this step up in trip at a much more galloping track. Fascinating handicap debutant.

Proved his stamina when belatedly off the mark at the ninth attempt when upped to this trip in a C&D maiden last month. That comfortable 2¼L success has been franked with the runner up Wefait winning since at Kempton. Therefore, a 4lb rise looks fair and he switches back to handicaps looking to maintain his 100% record on synthetics.

Masterful Act21
Age: 10|  Weight: 8-7| J: B A Curtis| T: J Balding| OR:  69
66/1
Old timer with a strong record on the Fibresand at Southwell, and generally much less effective elsewhere. Returned to the track after 13 months off for this new yard at Wolverhampton in February when a well beaten last of eight over 9½F and fared little better here when upped to 2m latest. Tough to fancy.

Forecasts

Gaelic Tiger (2/1), Briardale (4/1), Codeshare (9/2), Lac Leman (11/2), Lopes Dancer (15/2), Detachment (9/1), Belle De Lawers (25/1), Masterful Act (66/1)

Verdict

A few of these runners have question marks against their names; Belle De Lawers (well-being), Briardale (weights), Codeshare (resolution) and Lac Leman (trip), which helps to narrow down the likeliest winner. Gaelic Tiger has joined an excellent trainer who will surely get the very best out of this former Mark Johnston trained maiden winner and is much respected, whilst Lopes Dancer proved a revelation upped to this trip recently and that form has been franked since. However, the former Criquette Head-Mareek trained DETACHMENT is of major interest on his handicap debut. By Motivator, he'll relish this 1m2f trip and can prove to be a very shrewd purchase at 28,000 gns for Les Eyre.

  2. Gaelic Tiger
  3. Lopes Dancer
