Sold for £20,000 as a two-year-old and is related to a couple of winners over 1m. Stable not noted for winning debutantes but the colt is from good stock and can be placed to good effect once he has experience behind him.

Chatoyer

Represents a top yard that is very capable of having one ready first time out. He is a half-brother to a winner over an extended 10f, so very possible that he can come into his own over slightly further in due course.

Dam won over 6f and is half-brother to a 6f winner in Italy and Spain, finished no better than mid-division in a Naas maiden around this time last year but not seen out since. Hard to gauge on the limited evidence available but noteworthy that he comes a long way to make his AW debut and will interesting to see how the market reacts to his presence.

Cost 48,000 gns and fared respectably on his debut at Brighton as a two-year-old. Failed to build on that in a Novices Stakes at Ascot when last seen out, but that was a much better race than this, so has to merit respect in this company. One to be bear in mind.
A cheap purchase, he has the benefit of a couple of runs behind him but needs to step things up considerably in tough heat like this. Respected but other hold more potential at this stage.

Cost £75,000 and is a half-brother to admirable sprinter Tax Free. However, has already been well held twice over C&D this year and is difficult to fancy on that evidence.

Sparkalot18

Sales price bumped up to 120,000 gns as a two-year-old and was far from disgraced in a C&D maiden last month. Needs to step things up but has hinted at ability and looks another to give part-owner Harry Redknapp more fun at the races at least.

Taurean Gold16

Has winners in his pedigree but was never a factor in either of his two starts up to press and already has a huge amount of improvement to find. Not too hard to leave out of betting plans this time around.

Two starts so far have brought little to enthuse about in return and, though he may do better over slightly further when he goes into handicaps, he makes very limited appeal here.

Never really got competitive on debut at Yarmouth last summer and is probably best watched on his first start since (also makes his debut for a new yard tonight).

Respected for the fact that he represents such powerful connections in a very modest event. His dam won over 7f as a youngster, so entirely feasible that 6f will be the bare minimum for him. The betting market is likely to be cramped where this fellow is concerned but he has more ticks in the right boxes than most and has to be respected accordingly.

Joy
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-11| J: Ted Durcan| T: Mrs L J Mongan
25/1
Bred to be effective at anything up to and including 10f, she is related to numerous winners such as Ghost Dance, winner of a 10f Listed race in France. Stable doesn't have many contenders at this level but worth noting with interest in the betting.

Forecasts

Desert Rain (10/11), Sparkalot (5/2), Chatoyer (7/1), Raffle King (12/1), Imbucato (16/1), Joy (25/1), Shouldertoshoulder (25/1), Spare Parts (50/1), Charlie Alpha (66/1), Verdi (100/1), Artsteelwork (100/1), Taurean Gold (200/1)

Verdict

Not the most enthralling maiden of the week but the likes of Imbucato and Joy do make some appeal as horses for the notebook at least. However, it's very difficult to escape the claims of the well-bred DESERT RAIN, who is introduced at pretty low level considering the amount of winners in his pedigree and, whilst expectations are likely to be high, this appears to be a good bit of placement for him to get an educational run under his belt. Raffle King showed promise last season and is rated as bit threat, whereas Sparkalot has already dropped a hint that he too can make an impact somewhere along the line and is another to bear in mind for a place in the frame.

  3. Sparkalot
