Versatile and acts on both Turf and the AW surfaces; arguably better on the latter, so not without claims on the pick of his form. Notable that is currently 8lb lower than his last winning mark and, as a previous C&D winner, he has to be respected. But no easy task on these terms, even though the rider's 7lb will do no harm.

Claimed for £12,000 after winning his penultimate start but seemed to have reverted to type back in handicap company on his first outing for his new yard. Has won off a mark as high as 93 in days gone by and noted that he goes well for today's rider; but is a tad too inconsistent to be given a solid recommendation as one capable of bouncing back these days.

Won twice during his time in Ireland but then obviously endured set-backs in training. Hard to know what to expect now he return to the fray for a new yard and, unless the betting market suggests otherwise, he is best watched on this occasion.

Proving versatile regarding his best trip and noteworthy that he has acted well at this track in the past. He goes well fresh and, having been given a short break since posting a respectable effort at Wolverhampton, he would be dangerous to dismiss. Now 8lb higher than his last winning mark (also at Wolverhampton, last December), he has a stiffer test on his hands this time around.

Formerly with Sir Michael Stoute but has really thrived since joining his current yard, winning his last four starts with a degree of ease, in spite of the accumulative penalties mounting up. Now 23lb higher than when his winning run started, so needs to post by far his best effort to date. But has been in irresistible form, so likely to make a bold bid to cope with the burden. Disconcerting that he makes his Kempton debut, though.

Justified favouritism to stamp his authority over a moderate bunch in a maiden at Chelmsford when last seen out; escapes any penalties for that so merits respect on these terms. Pleasing that his yard had a winner at Doncaster on Sunday and it will be noteworthy if the market suggests this fellow is capable of backing it up with another solid effort on his reappearance.

Made steady progress until running as if something was amiss at Chelmsford last September. And might just have needed the outing when finishing a respectable fourth over C&D last month. Still 9lb higher than his only previous winning mark but is a likely type to improve now he has a run under his belt; and a worthy contender for a place in the frame on these terms.

A dual C&D winner, he seems to relish his visits to Kempton. Responded well for Stephen Cummings last time out (who could only claim 5lb under the terms of that race). The rider's full 7lb claim helps off-set a new career highest rating. But it's a shade disconcerting this fellow lacks consistency and never seems to run two races the same, making back-to-back wins an unlikely scenario on the evidence available.

A well-related individual but returned very little in three starts for Luca Cumani last season; and was similarly unimpressive on his recent debut for a new yard. Still has the potential to his level in handicaps but breeding suggests that he will come into his own over middle distances at least.

Won over 10f here last December but struggled after reassessment. Relatively unexposed on the AW but needs to post a much improved performance after folding tamely in his last couple of starts.

Forecasts

Cape Banjo (7/2), Hammer Gun (7/2), Believe It (5/1), New Agenda (15/2), Kestrel Dot Com (15/2), Golden Raven (9/1), Lunar Deity (10/1), Cape Icon (10/1), Zabeel Star (14/1), Lacan (25/1), Rock'n Gold (100/1)

Verdict

It's very rare that any horse can cope with a 23lb rise in the handicap and come out of the other side unscathed, so it's possible that the task facing Hammer Gun is one step too far at this stage of the campaign. Therefore, a chance is taken that CAPE BANJO can get his season off to a flyer and capitalise on the handicapper's clamping down on his main rival. Kestrel Dot Com is likely to strip fitter now he has a recent run under his belt and can do his bit to make this a stern test. New Agenda and Believe It are others to bear in mind if the market cast any uncertainty over the selection's claims.
  1. Cape Banjo
  2. Hammer Gun
  3. Kestrel Dot Com
