Won almost a fifth of his starts on the AW and, having won over C&D from a 2lb higher mark last July, he has a proven liking for this particular course. However, he has been out of sorts lately and now has a bit to prove on these terms.

Still a maiden but is getting a little help from the official assessor. Recent form has been regressive, though, and the application of cheekpieces appears to be a bit of experiment in a bid to stop the rot. First visit to this track but others make more appeal.

Showed promise early doors in her career but has rarely lived up to the potential. Showed signs of temperament on her recent return to action and, though she finished with a flourish; she till looks one to be wary of just now.

Built up a good relationship with today's rider and her 7lb helps offset a rise up the weights for a brace of successes over a mile during the winter AW campaign. Held off this mark last time out, but that was a slightly better race than this. One to consider for a place at least.

An in-and-out performer who emphatically ended a long losing run when scoring over 10f here three weeks ago. However, he was never a factor from a 3lb higher mark at Wolverhampton last time out and looks to have reverted to type. Represents an in-form yard but is another to treat with caution.

Goes well fresh, as evidenced when he sprung a bit of a surprise at his beloved Wolverhampton back in January. Hasn't been in anything like the same form in three subsequent outings and, considering he has failed to act on this track when tried here in the past, he looks opposable on his debut run for a new yard.

Last raced on the AW in October 2010 and, given that he showed very little interest in three outings over hurdles last year, he is not hard to overlook on this occasion.

On a long losing run but acted well on his only previous try over C&D, which was registered from a mark of 72. Currently very well treated on a literal reading of that statistic, he comes into this on the back of a couple of encouraging efforts in selling and claiming company. More to do this time around, but is well drawn and interesting to note he is one of only a couple of rides booked for Shane Kelly on this evening's card.

Won on the Fibresand at Southwell in January but has lost his way a little since then. Still 3lb above that winning mark and, even though he is lightly raced and has potential to improve, he does have a bit to find in this company. Also off-putting that he tries this surface for the first time.

Awarded a C&D race in the stewards room in February but confirmed his liking for Chelmsford with a solid effort last time out. Now 2lb higher and this is tougher, so he needs to dig deeper into his reserves if he is going to figure in this at the business end. But the track brings out the best in him and he is no forlorn hope for a speculative each-way punt.

Forecasts

Sexton Blake (5/2), Hannington (9/2), Samphire Coast (5/1), Pool House (6/1), Hold Firm (8/1), Mowhoob (10/1), Cleverconversation (14/1), Lord Of The Storm (14/1), Sir Lancelott (16/1), Hustle (25/1)

Verdict

Most of these are hard to win with, so siding with HOLD FIRM does have health warning attached. However, he gets on well with Gabrielle Malune and her 7lb claim can be a decisive tool if, as expected, this goes down to the wire. Pool House would be dangerous to leave out of the equation in this company and is a worthy contender for any shortlist, while Mowhoob seems to raise his game when he pays a visit to this course, and shouldn't underestimated under his featherweight.
  1. Hold Firm
  2. Pool House
  3. Mowhoob
