Beaten 21L in sole previous outing on turf over 1m1f at the Curragh in October. Needs to improve on that in AW bow to take a leading role in this.

Some progress from first to second start, beaten just over 7L last time over 7f here in December, addition of Smullen now is interesting.

Highly-tried at times last season, most recently when last home in Doncaster Group 1 in October. That said, sets a proper benchmark for this race.

Finished mid-division in a 7f maiden here in October, only previous outing. Open to improvement over this longer trip and should have place claims.

Filly out of New Approach will be closely monitored in the betting for her bow, trainer is good form and no surprise should she be in the shake-up.

Forecasts

The Anvil (3/10), Iron Mountain (4/1), Modern Approach (13/2), You Will Do For Me (8/1), Mauricio (14/1), Schindlers Ark (20/1), Downtown Rebel (33/1), Alfred Elmore (50/1)

Verdict

A son of Galileo, this looks an ideal opportunity for THE ANVIL to open his account. He was in the choppy waters of the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster when last seen and, given his official rating, it should take a really strong performance to deny him in this grade. His trainer is two-handed with Iron Mountain also likely to build on his maiden run over 7f here in October. The booking of Smullen adds some intrigue to Schindlers Ark while You Will Do For Me could challenge for minor honours and the filly Modern Approach is very much respected on bow for her master-trainer.
  1. The Anvil
  2. Modern Approach
  3. Iron Mountain
