Up 6lb for narrow defeat over this trip Clonmel earlier in the month, every chance of going one better if able to build on that improved showing.

Still a maiden but starting to get the hang of things now and looks capable if things fall right for him, forgive latest Fairyhouse effort over fences and could go close in this.

Be My Vinnie44

Remains a maiden but some encouraging signs of late, including over 2m4f at Fairyhouse in January when beaten just 7L. Potentially capable of better still upped to 3m for the first time.

Six attempts over hurdles at a variety of trips, including this one, have yielded few positives and beaten 93L latest at Cork in January.

Career-best effort at Thurles last week, narrow second over 2m off 3lb lower mark. Holds solid claims if that run signalled a corner being turned.

One win from 41 under rules and the best of his recent efforts suggest his clearest chance is at a shorter trip than the 3m he'll encounter here.

Best effort for a while at Punchestown last month over 2m4f but since been pulled up at Clonmel over this trip. Inconsistent profile in ten runs over hurdles.

Won a 2m4f handicap at Fairyhouse in November 2015 off just 1lb lower, been toiling over hurdles/fences since and beaten 29L back over that C&D in a hurdles contest in January. Upped in trip having been brought down chasing last month at Clonmel.

Sole victory over hurdles came this C&D all the way back in December 2013. Rated 8lb lower for this but recent efforts have been lacklustre.

Now 14-year-old and been chasing of late, ran well over this trip at Fairyhouse in January, though since pulled up back over that same C&D, both over fences. Bit to prove on most recent hurdles form

Three runs in maidens, getting a bit closer to the pace every time but backwards step on handicap hurdle debut over 2m4f at Punchestown last month and only 2lb lower here.

Gold Smoke23
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-10| J: Mr L J McGuinness(7)| T: E M O'Sullivan| OR:  81

Not always the most fluent jumper in three maiden hurdles but much-improved to be close fourth of 12 over 2m at Clonmel last month. Attempting this much longer trip for the first time.

Forecasts

For Carmel (5/2), The Church Gate (7/2), Mauna Kea (5/1), Highest Benefit (7/1), Be My Vinnie (8/1), Gold Smoke (8/1), Rare Legend (9/1), Telenor (16/1), Willow Grange (20/1), Dontdelay (20/1), Kilclooney Wood (22/1), Carrow Queen (25/1), Flemish Maid (25/1), Mount Masada (28/1), Steak And Spuds (33/1), Fiddlers Way (33/1), Supreme Steel (50/1)

Verdict

A speculative chance is taken with THE CHURCH GATE after he put up a notable effort when runner-up at Thurles last week. That was over 2m and this is clearly a journey into the unknown but if that form was a sign of things to come he should be very capable off a 1lb higher mark assuming no stamina issues arise. For Carmel went close over this trip at Clonmel last time out and is fancied to play a part despite carrying 6lb extra today. Rare Legend should do better back hurdling while Be My Vinnie is another stepping up in trip with some positives in his locker. Gold Smoke's most recent effort was much improved while Mauna Kea would be interesting if getting in for a first handicap start.
  1. The Church Gate
  2. For Carmel
  3. Rare Legend
