Brought down at the first on chasing debut at Ascot in November, and always towards the rear in a strong race last time at Newbury. Drops in grade, and down 3lbs to 122, and this is a more realistic option.
Course winner off 127 over hurdles, and beat the talented Double W's off 132 at Catterick in February. Seemingly not taken well to chasing in three starts this autumn/winter, but dropped 10lbs since October so potentially well handicapped.
Heavy ground hurdles winner in April 2016 (off 106) and a strong chasing pedigree. Therefore, no surprise to see him score over C&D on fencing debut in late November. Unable to follow up off 5lbs higher mark at Ffos Las (Heavy), and dropped a pound thereafter, promising to be suited by a return here on better ground.
Chasing debutant who is a three time winner over hurdles, including off this mark at Cheltenham in October 2015. Not had a great deal of racing in the past 12 months, with return at Leicester in December now looking a pipe opener for fences.
NHF and maiden hurdle winner who hasn't shown much appetite for chasing (on likely favoured ground, by Presenting) in two starts over fences at Aintree and Southwell.
Point winner who always looked chasing material when unsuccessful in six starts over hurdles. Made all and forged clear to score on rules fencing debut at Hexham in November (off 105), and twice a runner up since off this mark. Obvious contender.
A half length second to Deputy Commander on chase debut here in November, and renews rivalry on 5lbs better terms. Clear chance on that form, but outpaced when hampered and lost place three out next time over shorter at Towcester.
Two time winner over hurdles including when ready winner (off 96) on final start last year at Uttoxeter. Made a reasonable chase debut back there in early December (off this mark) when appearing to need the run.
PTP and dual hurdles scorer who has also been placed in two of his three starts over fences. Beaten just over four lengths when third at Sedgefield on Boxing Day and steps up in trip here in a deeper race.
Forecasts
I Just Know (7/4), Deputy Commander (9/2), Kilronan Castle (15/2), Duke Arcadio (8/1), Towering (10/1), Beggars Cross (10/1), Royal Milan (12/1), Wade Harper (14/1), Bertie Lugg (33/1)
The handicapper is beginning to give both Royal Milan and Wade Harper some slack and consequently this race is weaker than the ones that they've contested so far over fences. The latter in particular is dangerous from this mark if showing more over the larger obstacles. Conversely, the progressive and much respected I Just Know is stepping up in grade after a pleasing start to his career over fences. However, the C&D contest here in November in which DEPUTY COMMANDER and Duke Arcadio clashed appears to hold the key to this race, with Nigel Twiston-Davies winner expected to confirm placings despite meeting the runner up on five pounds worse terms.
1. Deputy Commander
2. Duke Arcadio
3. Wade Harper
