Fran Berry column ahead of King George weekend at Ascot

Fran Berry hopes to build on last weekend's four-timer and he looks ahead to rides at Ascot and York on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

Four winners last Saturday was grand - you go there thinking you've a good book of rides on a busy day but for everything to click to marvellous.

To have two winners for David Menuisier at Newmarket was great as he's been a good supporter of mine this season and for two of his highest-profile horses to go and win as they did was really satisfying.

The way Vintager did it in that good handicap was superb and the assessor has bumped him up 10lb to 112, but by all accounts his sectional times were impressive and for a three-year-old under a big weight against older horses, it was really good.

David feels there's two or three options going forward, including a Group race at Salisbury and a couple in France too, so there's plenty open to him.

Danceteria is having a fine year and while it was only a two-runner race, he stayed very well and the further he went the better he was so hopefully there's even more to come after he was gelded earlier in the year. He feels ready for a step up to a mile and a half now.

Hakeem was a nice ride to pick up for William Haggas and Sheikh Hamdan on the July Course. He showed the benefit of dropping back in trip and the addition of cheekpieces definitely helped. He showed good determination to get up to win and he's a big horse who has taken a little while to fulfil that potential.

I then rode Barend Boy to win at Lingfield for Hugo Palmer and that felt like one of them when everything's going your way. I've ridden winners for Hugo in the past and this fella has obviously improved for being gelded.

Ascot on Friday looks a good card and hopefully I've a couple of decent chances. There are some heavy showers forecast around the country and people are going to have to be mindful of the weather but I doubt it will change the ground dramatically.

American Gigolo is versatile in that regard thankfully and I'm hopeful for him in the JGR Brown Jack Handicap as he's fresh from a break and I still think there's mileage in his Flat mark on turf.

He did well over the winter, winning three in a row, and clearly didn't enjoy the deep ground at Musselburgh on Good Friday, while I feel you can put a line through his run at Chester last time. That was too bad to be true and maybe Musselburgh just left a mark on him.

If you look back at his winning form at Newcastle it stands up pretty well, beating Dubawi Fifty, and I think that's been a little bit forgotten about going into this race. He has a live chance, for sure.

It'll be a bit odd riding against my old pal Gracious John in the Neptune Investment Management Handicap but Vibrant Chords has a clear chance.

It was only his second run of the season when winning in slightly controversial circumstances at Sandown last time but he broke smartly and was really professional to battle back and win on the nod.

He's a very smart horse on his day and a 4lb rise only brings him back up to the sort of mark he was competing off last year so if he has improved again then I'd fancy him to go well in another very, very competitive handicap.

I'm looking forward to getting back on Great Hall at Ascot but you'd have to say that he's one that would benefit from a freak thunderstorm to bring him into the equation in the JGR Handicap. He's been found wanting a bit of late on ground too fast for him and may find this tough again unless the going changes.

Onto York on Saturday and Thundering Blue is stepping up in class for the Group Two Sky Bet York Stakes.

Ratings-wise he still has something to find and take another step up but to me he did really well to finish second in the John Smith's Cup last time off a slow gallop. That gives you hope he's worthy of taking his chance in this company.

It's a warm Group Two and Elarqam is the unexposed three-year-old in the race and you'd have to say he's going to be a danger to all getting weight for age. He's always looked like a step up to a mile and a quarter would suit him well.

At the Curragh he didn't finish his race because he got in a pace war but he does have a question to answer now returning from a break and you don't know how good the Classic generation are.

With the eight runners I definitely wouldn't put anyone off backing my horse each-way as some of the other older horses can be taken on.

I'm also on Slunovrat for David in the Sky Bet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap. I've never ridden him before now but he's on good form after winning at Nottingham on his comeback. That was on soft and he'd benefit from some rain, while he's a course winner after scoring over course and distance at York a couple of years ago.

He's up to a career-high rating but if there is a bit of rain he'd be right in the reckoning.

Artair looks an interesting ride to pick up in the Sporting Life Fast Results Nursery Handicap. He started off with two promising runs, winning at Yarmouth second time out.

He flopped at Sandown but showed a bit more last time and the step up to six furlongs could unlock some improvement. Time will tell whether or not an initial mark of 83 is fair.

Over at Ascot on Saturday, Cracksman was a surprise declaration for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes and we'll have to see what the weather brings.

If the rain came and Cracksman did show up then it'll be hugely exciting but Poet's Word did beat him fair and square in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and he's arguably going to be even better back up to a mile and a half. He's won over the trip before and I've not fears over him going back up - I could see him going off favourite.

Crystal Ocean couldn't have done it any better in the Hardwicke although the form may not be much to write home about. Coronet has a good course record and Hydrangea is 1-1 at the trip and steps up from a mile which may not have been suiting her ideally.

It's maybe not a vintage renewal but it looks exciting and I'd just come down on the side of Poet's Word, for all Cracksman is the most exciting angle should he turn up.

I'd imagine Desert Encounter will be ridden for a place and he could end up second or third at a huge price.

Looking a little further ahead I'm delighted to say I'm going to be part of the 13th renewal of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot on August 11, taking part in the Great Britain and Ireland team once again.

This will be my fourth Shergar Cup appearance in total and it's a great, great day with a massive crowd. It's something I've been looking forward to since being part of the winning team last year so it's fantastic to get the call-up.
