David Ord with six horses to follow at Newmarket this week

The two-year-olds take centre stage at Newmarket this week and in his latest column David Ord has six potential runners to add to your My Stable tracker.

Much has been made of the current juvenile crop. In recent weeks Too Darn Hot, Querto, Sangarius and Madhmoon have thrown down significant markers for this season and next.

This week Newmarket stage some very interesting pattern and maiden races. There's the occasional A-lister turning up to the party, Ten Sovereigns for example, and plenty of others with aspirations of dining at the top table at some stage.

Here's a look at just six who fall into the latter category.

BABBO'S BOY (Michael Bell)

A 110,000 guineas son of Mastercraftsman, he wouldn’t be the most expensive colt running in the Bonhams EBF Maiden at Newmarket on Thursday – but there’s a chance he might be the best.

Michael Bell has a very useful two-year-old filly in action over the three days with Pretty Pollyanna favourite for Saturday’s Cheveley Park Stakes and it’s fascinating this colt has been given a Group One entry of his own – in the Vertem Futurity Stakes. He was given a positive mention in our Catching Pigeons column earlier in the summer and is an intriguing runner, to say the least.

HUMANTIARIAN (John Gosden)

Another Vertem Futurity entry in the same race – this time from the power-packed John Gosden yard. A $200,000 son of Noble Mission, he’s a half-brother to three winners and from the family of Pomology, who won a Lancashire Oaks for the same stable.

It’s a pedigree that screams middle-distance three-year-old, which is clearly what he’ll be, but it’s interesting he’s shown enough at home for his trainer to stick him in one of the big autumn showpieces.

PRINCE EIJI (Roger Varian)

When you spend 2.6million guineas on a son of Dubawi from the family of Jazzi Top you hope he can run. It doesn’t always work out of course but the signs are promising for Roger Varian’s charge, who made a winning start at Ascot last month.

He knew his job on debut and showed a good attitude to fend off Red Armada by half-a-length. It’s early days for the form, with fourth home Felix The Poet opening his own account at Wolverhampton on Saturday night but Murray River, seventh, soundly beaten at Yarmouth. But it was all about potential. The Tattersalls Stakes (the artist formerly know as the Somerville Tattersalls) is a much sterner test but it would be disappointing if Prince Eiji didn’t go well. He’s a scopey sort who will improve and make into a lovely three-year-old. He’ll stay a mile, too.

HIDDEN MESSAGE (William Haggas)

Her career only started at Yarmouth last week but such was the impression she made, William Haggas has left her in the Rockfel Stakes on Friday. Whether she takes up the engagement or not, this is a filly very much to follow.

She took a tall home reputation with her to the south coast and left with it in tact after a three-and-three-quarters length defeat of previous winner Promote. It was more the style than the substance of the victory though, the daughter of Scatt Daddy travelling well and showing a smart turn of foot to quickly seal matters at the furlong pole. One to follow this season and through 2019 with any luck.

KADAR (Karl Burke)

Another progeny of Scat Daddy and another potential star for Karl Burke. Owners Phoenix Thoroughbreds are emerging forces in the game so clearly there’s pressure when it comes to a $700,000 purchase like this, but he made a taking start when winning at Haydock.

He was briefly short of room approaching the final furlong but hit the line hard as he scored by a length-and-a-quarter from a highly-regarded previous winner of John Gosden’s in Waldstern. From a wonderful Aga Khan family that includes the likes of Kalanisi, he has a pedigree to die for. There’s plenty of ability too.

KHAADEM (Charlie Hills)

All eyes will be on Ten Sovereigns here but he faces a dangerous and progressive rival in Charlie Hills’ charge. He’s improving with racing and having opened his account at the second attempt at Newmarket last month, followed up in good style at the Doncaster St Leger Meeting.

A length-and-a-quarter defeat of Swissterius is decent form but there’s reason to believe the winner can rate significantly higher at some stage. He still has a tendency to be too keen but hopefully that will be ironed out with more experience and when the penny does drop there’s a serious racehorse in there. He’s one for whom there won’t be Classic aspirations - this is a sprinter through-and-through - and he might just be a rattlingly good one.
