Jelle Klaasen sensationally thrashed Peter Wright 6-1 to knock the world champion out of the PDC Home Tour and reach the last eight.
Snakebite headed into the opening night of online tournament's second stage, which consists of eight groups of four players, as 3/1 title favourite and was therefore widely expected to top the standings ahead of Klaasen, Cristo Reyes and Ryan Murray.
But Wright, who finished runner-up in his first-round group last month before making the most of his second chance to progress just over a week ago, failed to get anywhere near his sparkling best by recording averages below 90 in all three of his matches.
The Scotsman's marks of 88.2 and 83.1 were still good enough to see off compatriot Murray 6-2 and Spain's Reyes 6-5 respectively but his worst performance was ruthlessly punished by Klaasen in the final game of the night.
Wright averaged just 80.7 compared to his opponent's solid 90.4 while the heavy nature of the scoreline saw him slump from top spot to third as the Dutchman booked his place in next week's semi-final groups.
Klaasen had endured an agonising start to the evening by losing to Reyes 6-5 in an entertaining match in which both players averaged over 90 but he stormed back to defeat Murray 6-4 from 3-1 down.
Reyes, who spurned six match darts to beat Wright, overcame Murray 6-3 in the penultimate match of the night, meaning Klaasen needed a victory of 6-3 or better to snatch top spot.
And he did so with room to spare.
