Completely lost his confidence over fences after completing a double on chasing debut at Chepstow (2m) last autumn. Didn't immediately benefit from return to hurdles on reappearance at Newton Abbot last time. Given another chance by the handicapper, though, and has plenty of soft-ground form.

Sole success in this sphere came on debut at Wetherby (heavy) in 2023. Back on similar ground when runner-up at Warwick in February last year. Off since finishing well held under contrasting conditions at Haydock the following month. On a fair mark but market can guide following 19-month absence.

Enthusiastic maiden who went close over C&D in January. Second to a progressive one at Sedgefield in August. Likely still in form (went off too hard there last time) and another change of headgear/return of more established jockey no harm to his chances. Engaged 3.14 Kelso Saturday.

Fair staying-mudlark on the Flat. Sole novice win in this sphere came under similar conditions. Back to something like that form when runner-up in Hexham handicap in the spring (looked amiss at Uttoxeter next time). Set to have favourable conditions on return, for all his record fresh is ordinary.

Hasn't gone on (lightly raced) from an encouraging third in a heavy-ground Wetherby novice in February 2025. Likely to be back under testing conditions for the first time since, having finished down the field in first-time tongue strap (now removed) over C&D in May. Cannot be totally discounted.

Poor maiden. Didn't run as badly as he has when well held at this track (18.5f) last month (again reported to have a breathing problem). Couldn't even match that effort at Sedgefield subsequently, though.

Forecasts

Lightning Flash (7/4), Character Testing (7/2), Justus (4/1), Klapton Boy (9/2), Steel Fixer (6/1), Kourosh (8/1), Battle Stride (28/1)

Verdict

Hopefully LIGHTNING FLASH gained some confidence from his recent return to hurdling and can capitalise on a reduced mark. The main danger if lining up looks to be Character Testing, who went closest to breaking his duck over C&D earlier in the year.
