A fair winning hurdler who has shown promise in a pair of 2½m handicaps since switching to fences and is open to progress now stepping up to 3m. Leading claims.

Reacted well to first-time blinkers when landing this race on soft ground 12 months ago. Reappeared with a respectable second at Carlisle in February. Not in the same form twice since but has dipped to just 1 lb above last year's winning mark if a change of headgear (visored now) sparks a revival.

Wide-margin winner of the Edinburgh National just over 2 years ago but been more miss than hit since, labouring a long way out at Carlisle last time. A leap of faith is required.

Failed to win in 20 attempts over hurdles but came good at the first time of asking over fences in C&D handicap (heavy) in October. Probably needed a recent Kelso outing after 5 months off and could go well back here.

Increasingly temperamental mare who's shown very little over hurdles since last summer. It remains to be seen whether a switch to fences makes any difference.

Didn't show a great deal in bumpers/over hurdles but this 7-y-o has shown more when placed over fences this season. However, he was let down by his jumping at Ayr with cheekpieces added (retained) last time.

Forecasts

Loulou Madrik (5/2), Burgundy Man (4/1), Jirko (4/1), Nights In Venice (4/1), Inis Oirr (9/2), Casual Observer (9/2), Uptown Harry (11/2), Lady In The Park (6/1), Sir Carnegie (12/1), William Of York (14/1), Jakana (50/1)

Verdict

CASUAL OBSERVER should have more to come over fences now stepping up to 3m and can see off fellow low-mileage sort Loulou Madrik, who made a sound start to his chase career at Carlisle recently. Nights In Venice and last year's winner Lady In The Park are others to consider.
