Gieves & Hawkes Novices' Handicap Chase

Off time: 13:53 | Winning time: 6m 7.83s

Streamsforth Lad^p,t⁵

Age: 8| Weight: 12-0| J: G Sheehan| T: G Hanmer| OR: 97

13/8

Backed up his runner-up finish over C&D with a close second at Hexham 5 days ago, despite losing all momentum at the last, and a similar performance may see him get off the mark.

Form: 3UUF22

Atlanta Brave^p³¹

Age: 8| Weight: 12-0| J: C O'Farrell| T: Kerry Lee| OR: 97| D

20/1

Having fallen a long way in the weights, ran better than for a while when third on return at Hereford, and he could be in the mix if building on that with cheekpieces refitted.

Form: PP-P853

Subtle Fortune¹⁸

Age: 8| Weight: 11-13| J: Mr D Andrews⁽⁷⁾| T: Mrs M Rowley| OR: 96| D

7/1

Dual point winner who immediately surpassed hurdles achievements when scoring on chase debut at Hereford in February and again looked all about stamina when third of 10 over C&D last time.

Form: 1-44143

Siege Of Acres^h³⁰

Age: 5| Weight: 11-13| J: Theo Gillard| T: D McCain Jnr| OR: 98| BF

25/1

Made the frame both starts in Irish points and having finished much closer than previously when third on chase debut, looked set to fill the same position when falling (jumps low) at Sedgefield last time. Remains with some potential over a more suitable trip, though.

Form: 76463F

El Rojo Grande²³

Age: 9| Weight: 11-9| J: Shane Quinlan⁽³⁾| T: Katy Price| OR: 92| D

10/1

Thrived on his racing in recent months, making it 4 wins from previous 6 starts (close second the other twice) when successful at Warwick last time. However, he's largely untested over this trip and could be worth taking on from a 4 lb higher mark.

Form: 111221

Sandscape^p1⁵¹

Age: 6| Weight: 11-9| J: Harry Bannister| T: H D Daly| OR: 92| BF

12/1

Having split a pair of next-time-out winners on reappearance, he went the wrong way over hurdles before jumping poorly when fourth of 8 on chase debut at Ludlow in February. Market expected better that day, though, and cheekpieces could sharpen him up.

Form: 423554

Peckforton Hills^p,t²⁵

Age: 6| Weight: 11-7| J: Toby Wynne| T: O Greenall & J Guerriero| OR: 90| BF

8/1

Carlisle bumper winner didn't look the hardiest when again finding one too good at Southwell (3m) last time, though his pedigree suggests he should make a chaser.

Form: 067322

Black Occ²⁴

Age: 7| Weight: 11-4| J: Callum Pritchard⁽³⁾| T: Sheila Lewis| OR: 87

10/1

Maiden left his chase debut form behind when second to a subsequent winner at Hereford last time, though didn't totally convince with his stamina on sole try over a staying trip as a hurdler.

Form: 75/PP32

Kapamazov³¹

Age: 9| Weight: 11-1| J: Lee Edwards| T: A W Carroll| OR: 84

16/1

Maiden has plenty of creditable placed form, and having been a tad close to a sound pace when (15/8) third of 6 at Hereford last time, he could be interesting if the money comes again on second start for Tony Carroll.

Form: 2-72333

Rockvale²⁸

Age: 7| Weight: 10-11| J: Thomas Bellamy| T: S Allwood| OR: 80

12/1

Lightly-raced sort placed on each of his three starts in points, and while never involved on chase debut last season, there was a modicum of promise in his hurdle reappearance (in first-time hood). Not totally ruled out back over fences.

Form: 3/7069-8

Shuile Warrior⁴⁴

Age: 8| Weight: 10-9| J: Murray Dodd⁽⁷⁾| T: Simon Edwards| OR: 78| D

28/1

Point winner (out of a dam from a smart staying family) has achieved little under Rules but at least warrants a market check upped significantly in trip for this quick switch to handicaps/fences.

Form: 21-2595

Tory Hill^p,t¹⁴

Age: 8| Weight: 10-6| J: Jonathon Bewley| T: G Bewley| OR: 75

20/1

Runner-up all 4 completed starts in Irish points and went as close as he has under Rules when runner-up at Carlisle latest, first-time cheekpieces/less testing conditions both likely catalysts for that return to form.

Form: 87-PP52

Harksman^p²¹

Age: 6| Weight: 10-6| J: James Best| T: M Keighley| OR: 75

40/1

Made more impact than previously (in first-time cheekpieces) when sixth of 9 in a handicap at Stratford last time, though he'll need to jump more fluently to be competitive on chase debut.

Form: 7-50666

Huckleberry Sting^h,t³⁸

Age: 7| Weight: 10-5| J: Jack Andrews| T: T Ellis| OR: 74| D

12/1

Won sole start in points after leaving Dan Skelton at the end of 2023/24 and having showed he retains ability over hurdles for current yard this season, needs a close look in the betting now sent chasing over a longer trip.

Form: 90F/1-77

Forecasts

Streamsforth Lad (13/8), Subtle Fortune (7/1), Peckforton Hills (8/1), El Rojo Grande (10/1), Black Occ (10/1), Huckleberry Sting (12/1), Sandscape (12/1), Rockvale (12/1), Kapamazov (16/1), Atlanta Brave (20/1), Tory Hill (20/1), Siege Of Acres (25/1), Shuile Warrior (28/1), Harksman (40/1)

A market to keep a close eye on but STREAMSFORTH LAD has been knocking at the door and must have solid claims to open his account. Kapamazov may well do better on second start for Tony Carroll, with Siege Of Acres perhaps worth another chance in an open-looking handicap.
