Winner on the Flat and though yet to hit the target following 19 attempts over jumps, he has posted several solid efforts in defeat. Latest third in a 15-runner Wincanton handicap (2½m, soft) was among his best jumps form and he has strong claims back in maiden company.

Well beaten in a bumper on debut early last year and just glimmers of ability in a handful of runs over hurdles. Will likely be better off in handicaps further down the line.

Shaped like a ready-made future winner when second in a bumper at Bangor on debut last spring. However, failed to build on that in 2 subsequent starts and step forward needed now switched to hurdles.

Won sole start in point bumpers in February 2023 and followed up in a first-time hood (retained) in a Newton Abbot on Rules debut in July of that year. Looked useful that day and, though absent since, it'll be interesting to see how he shapes up in the betting ahead of this hurdles/stable debut.

Useful handicapper on the Flat for Andrew Balding and placed on 3 of his 4 starts since switched to hurdles, most recently finishing third of 10 on handicap bow in this sphere at Musselburgh (2½m, good). Major player.

Forecasts

Bright Legend (11/8), Who's Glen (2/1), Phantom Gold (11/2), Hay Max (7/1), Monark Wood (16/1), Fearless Dragon (25/1)

Verdict

It's been the thick end of 3 years since PHANTOM GOLD was last seen on a racecourse but, provided that the market vibes surrounding this 8-y-o are upbeat, he may nevertheless prove too good for these. Bright Legend and Who's Glen both put in good shifts in handicaps last time and will likely fight out the finish if Phantom Gold isn't fit enough to do himself justice.
