Course regular who bagged this prize 12 months ago and went in again in first time blinkers here in November. Consistency never been his strong point (pulled up last 2 starts) but this drop back in trip may help.

As good as ever when landing same Aintree race for the second year running on return, beating a subsequent winner. Hasn't kicked on in 2 subsequent outings, though possibly found the marathon test too much in the Eider last time. Likely player back down in trip.

Didn't need to improve much to make a winning reappearance at Carlisle (3m) off 5 lb higher but has not scaled same heights since, merely passing beaten rivals when runner-up over extended 2½m at Ayr 2 weeks ago. Steps back up in trip now.

Hurdles winner with a mixed record but registered a second chase success away from bottomless ground at Ludlow (3m) 23 days ago, closed down run-in. Raised 3 lb on back of that and this looks tougher.

Excellent second in Borders National over further here in December but pulled up in similar event at Bangor 24 days ago. Application of cheekpieces needs to have positive effect back down markedly in trip.

7/2
Hurdles winner who was twice a runner-up over fences (including over C&D) prior to opening his account at Ayr (3m, heavy) 26 days ago, looking in command when left clear last. Operating from out of weights but sufficiently lightly raced to think he could yet have more to offer.

Forecasts

Fortunate Man (15/8), Blakey Boy (7/2), Aboutdamntime (9/2), Dare To Shout (5/1), Cadell (7/1), Breeze Of Wind (10/1)

Verdict

FORTUNATE MAN seemed to find the test too much when mid-field in last month's Eider Chase at Newcastle and with this assignment looking more suitable, he's selected to come out on top from what remains a workable mark. Last-time-out winners Aboutdamntime and Blakey Boy may emerge as the chief threats.
