Gained another win at Newcastle (last 5 wins have come there) in November and went close to following up there later that month. Threatening to come good again soon judged on latest effort there but hasn't fully fired in 2 previous visits to Southwell.

Won comprehensively at Chelmsford last month and quickly back to that level when second over C&D 3 weeks ago, though again didn't find as much as seemed likely when looming up.

Had been running poorly over jumps but made a creditable return to the Flat when fourth of 7 in a handicap at Wolverhampton (11/1) 32 days ago, not ideally placed. Down slightly in class.

Placed a couple of times for Roger Varian. Not at that level either start for this yard after a break but had excuses (caught wide and raced freely at Wolverhampton last time). First-time tongue strap applied.

Hard to win with but stepped up markedly on stable debut when fourth of 12 in a handicap at Wolverhampton (16/1) 26 days ago, doing too much too soon. Entitled to come on again but others more solid.

Still a maiden but responded well to first-time cheekpieces when third over C&D in December. Failed to match that form after and blinkers now given a whirl.

C&D winner in December and won again here (12f) following month. However, found run of good form coming to a halt when fourth of 8 at Wolverhampton (10/3) 12 days ago, looking rather laboured.

Lightly-raced maiden for Karl Burke. Well held in 2 runs here last winter and missed rest of 2025 (subsequently sold for 10,000 gns). Tongue strap on.

Lightly-raced maiden who made much more of an impact off reduced mark when third of 12 in a handicap at Wolverhampton (8/1) 26 days ago, racing freely in rear after a slow start. Respected with hood back on.

Left maiden form well behind after 5 months off when making a winning handicap debut over C&D 4 weeks ago, coming home with a flourish once getting the hang of things. That race starting to work out and she may well have more to come for her promising yard, so leading contender up 5 lb.

Not the most enthusiastic and below par tried in headgear this year. Plenty to prove for new yard (has left David Loughnane).

Dominated a classified race at Wolverhampton last month before following up back in a handicap here over 12f. Completed hat-trick at Newcastle (7/2) with a lot to spare under this rider 2 weeks ago so must be respected despite being 4 lb higher in better race.

Forecasts

Velvet Red (3/1), Havachoc (7/2), The Corporate Guy (7/1), Hackney Diamonds (8/1), Seraphic (8/1), Prince Achille (10/1), Educate (12/1), Karthala (12/1), Chicago Storm (16/1), Arth's Gold (16/1), Spec Of Light (33/1), Nala The Lioness (33/1)

Verdict

VELVET RED proved a totally different proposition when making a winning handicap bow over C&D on return last month, coming home strongly, and looks capable of defying a 5 lb rise. Havachoc arrives in the form of his life so rates the main threat ahead of The Corporate Guy, who made much more of an impact off his reduced mark at Wolverhampton.
