Useful third in Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham last January but hasn't replicated that form since, back in a handicap when well held fifth in Pertemps qualifier at Wincanton last time. Connections try another change of headgear but he may need further respite from the handicapper.

Useful Grade 1 novice hurdle winner in 2023/24 season but has stood little racing since, finishing lame in a novice chase on what was effectively his seasonal/chase debut in November 2024. Market can guide on handicap hurdle debut following 13-month absence.

Proved a different proposition when making all in 2m4f Bangor handicap on return in November and confirmed that improvement off much higher mark when clear third in strong handicap at Newbury (20.5f) latest. Up another 3 lb but he's unexposed over staying trips and there could well be more to come.

Relatively unexposed stayer who made a winning reappearance at Ayr prior to finishing fifth in the Betfair Stayers' handicap at Haydock. Resumed winning ways with a smooth-travelling success at Carlisle (25f, soft) and while this is more competitive, he's clearly in the form of his life.

Very useful staying handicapper in 2022/23 but off for 33 months prior to being pulled up in handicap hurdle at Sandown (23.5f) 35 days ago. Remains to be seen whether he's the force of old as a 9-y-o.

Progressive as a novice and got right back on track when well-backed runner-up on first start over a staying trip at Chepstow (23.6f). In better company here but he's lightly raced and could take another step forward.

10/1
Useful winning hurdler in 2023/24. Not discredited after 19 months off when third in C&D handicap in November but pulled up on his belated chasing bow at Cheltenham after an early blunder. Low mileage for his age but would need a career-best back over hurdles (yard also saddle Royal Rambler).

Confirmed the progression he'd shown last season, making it three wins from previous 4 starts when gamely seeing off 10 rivals over 3m on Newbury reappearance. Respectable third behind Royal Rambler at Chepstow subsequently but will need to pull out more in a better race.

Promising sort in 2023/24 and looked the type capable of landing a top-end staying handicap on soft ground. Clearly hasn't been the easiest to train since (rusty on reappearance at Ascot last month) but he's on a workable mark if capable yard have him back on song.

Quick to make his mark for new yard at Chepstow (3m) in October. Still in good heart but unable to land a blow in first-time cheekpieces (retained) when sixth in a steadily-run handicap at Cheltenham last time. In top hands and he can make more impact faced with a greater test of stamina here.

Impressive winner of 2m5f Grade 2 Hyde at Cheltenham as novice in 2023. Had issues since but last 2 starts suggest he's heading back in the right direction, still in contention when flattening 2 out in 2½m handicap here last time. Interesting if he can build on that back over 3m.

Much improved when successful on handicap/stable debut at Perth (2½m, heavy) in October. Backed that up when third at Cheltenham but found 2m5f on good ground around Kempton too sharp last time. Likely to be seen to better effect upped in trip on softer ground.

Progressive novice hurdler for Fergal O'Brien who shaped well when third at Newbury in March last year. Disappointed since, latterly when racing in snatches in first-time cheekpieces (now removed) on second try over fences. On a realistic mark for hurdles return but has some questions to answer.

Likeable mare arrives at the top of her game, successful on reappearance at Chepstow and backed that up in a higher grade when third in a 7-runner handicap at Cheltenham (24f) on New Year's Day. Should give her running for last year's winning trainer but may prove vulnerable for win purposes.

3-time hurdle winner has returned in fine heart, narrowly denied on reappearance at Lingfield before finishing close third in a steadily-run handicap (better placed than Tranquil Sea) at Cheltenham. Fell early over same C&D last time but ought to hold his own if none the worse for that tumble.

Forecasts

Lud'or (10/3), Royal Rambler (10/3), Kap Boy (6/1), Nab Wood (9/1), Doughmore Bay (10/1), Long Draw (10/1), Love Of Neymore (12/1), Captain Teague (14/1), Minella Missile (16/1), Keable (16/1), Tranquil Sea (16/1), Go To War (20/1), Spike Jones (25/1), Botox Has (33/1), Lord Snootie (40/1), Green Book (66/1)

Verdict

Already a much-improved model this season, LUD'OR is totally unexposed over staying trips and could be the answer in an open-looking renewal. It would be no surprise to see Dan Skelton's Tranquil Sea make a bold bid for this valuable pot, having not been seen to best effect at Cheltenham last time, while Minella Missile was an exciting novice a few seasons back and he'd be interesting if building on a more promising run over 2½m in cheekpieces here on New Year's Day.
