Useful on his day but no show both starts during 2023/24 campaign and recent reappearance display at Doncaster (first run for almost 2 years) reaffirmed the impression that he's no longer the force of old.

Left first 2 efforts behind when winning a Ffos Las maiden hurdle last spring and resumed with a handicap debut near-miss at Sandown (19.8f, good) in November. Disappointing at Leicester since but this lightly-raced 6-y-o is in top hands and is probably worth another chance.

Winner of first 3 starts under Rules and, though disappointing initially in handicaps, he went close at Ayr last spring and kicked off this season with a creditable third at Kempton (21f, good to soft). Fell at around the halfway point on subsequent chase debut and possibilities back in this sphere.

Came good in 2½m Hexham handicap (heavy) on reappearance in October, forging a long way clear under desperate conditions. Delivered another bold show when a clear second here (19f, good) last time and while his mark has shot up 13 lb since his Hexham success, he's impossible to rule out.

Fairly useful hurdler for Henry de Bromhead and reasonable start for present yard when third in a 6-runner Lingfield handicap in December 2024. However, she didn't get far (unseated at the third flight) back from almost a year off at Sandown and subsequently well held at Windsor.

Very lightly-raced 9-y-o who cashed in on a falling mark in 20.8f handicap at Kelso last spring. Has visited the same course for his 2 subsequent outings, most recently finishing a good second on his reappearance at the end of December. Solid each-way chance.

Low-mileage 6-y-o who opened his account in C&D maiden last March and improved further when good second of 9 in handicap hurdle at Kelso the following month. Stepped up on his reappearance effort when runner-up at Doncaster last time and he's one to consider.

Point winner who made a promising start in this sphere on the back of wind surgery (also tongue tied) when second in a Bangor novice in November. Duly went one better with an all-the-way success in a maiden at Musselburgh (19.8f, good to soft) and further progress likely now handicapping.

Four-time winner over hurdles, the latest gained off a 1 lb lower mark at Kelso last spring. He has failed to reproduce that form in 4 subsequent starts, though (2 in this sphere; 2 over fences) and others make more appeal on this occasion.

16/1
Winner of a maiden chase in May 2024 for Paul Nolan, which was his sole success from 14 starts under Rules in Ireland. However, he did show some promise over hurdles and is worth a second look on debut for the Skelton yard off what is potentially a handy mark. Has undergone a wind op.

Ready scorer at Newcastle in November before an early unseat over fences at Catterick. Returned to this sphere with an excellent second in a14-runner handicap hurdle at the same course (19.3f, good) 20 days ago and, though now 5 lb higher in a tougher race, he's not without each-way hope.

Hasn't really kicked on from his Newcastle maiden hurdle success last January, failing to make much of an impact switched to handicaps with cheekpieces enlisted during the spring. Headgear discarded back from an 8-month absence here and he needs to get back on track.

Runner-up sole completed start in Irish points and, having hinted at promise in a trio of novice hurdles, he predictably took a step forward when striking on recent handicap debut at Catterick (15.7f, good). Can be expected to raise his game again now upped in trip and 6 lb rise looks manageable.

Dual winner of novice hurdles during 2023/24 campaign for Alastair Ralph but she was generally below par last season. Has undergone a wind op since latest appearance during the spring and starts out for new yard on a workable mark but others are more appealing all the same.

Yet to add to Exeter maiden hurdle success back in October 2024 but positive start to this season when making the frame in handicaps at Chepstow and Warwick. Shaped as though amiss upped to 24.3f at Doncaster last time (since undergone another wind op) and she's certainly not one to write off.

Modest at best in bumpers but quietly progressive over hurdles and took another step in the right direction when 3¾ lengths third to Brookside La on handicap debut at Wetherby (19.7f, soft). 5 lb pull may not be enough for him to turn the tables, though, and Killycarn is presumable the stable No 1.

Six-figure buy as a store and no surprise that he left his maiden/novice form well behind when making a winning handicap debut at Wetherby (19.7f, soft). Did well to come from behind in what was a slowly-run race that day and, with further improvement likely, he's a big player up 4 lb.

Verdict

The pick of a clutch of progressive and unexposed types is KILLYCARN, who impressed with the way he travelled through the race and asserted after the final flight on his handicap debut at Catterick. There should be more to come from him now that he's faced with a stiffer test. Brookside La and Judicial Deference bring similarly appealing profiles to the table and are feared most in that order of preference, while Below The Radar and High Dancer also need considering.
